Can we restore/recover database references?

Hi,

Imagine a mimic has been deleted from the database. The mimics on which this mimic was utilised as an embedded mimic now show a red "X" with a tooltip showing the path of the deleted mimic and a "can't be found" message.

Subsequently, the deleted mimic is re-imported from elsewhere, in the same location with the same name, but a new object ID.

The affected mimics are now able to find the embedded mimic again, and normal service is resumed.

However - the database references were deleted along with the original mimic, and now don't exist. Two questions arise:

1) Is this likely to cause any problems in terms of functionality, or does the lack of a database reference simply mean that when deleting an object in future, the associated warning relating to database references will be absent?

2) Is there any method of restoring/recovering the deleted object or the associated database references? Or forcing new references to be created (without deleting/recreating each instance of the embedded mimic)?

Thanks in advance 🙂

How interesting. I just tried it and you're right. A restart of ViewX doesn't fix it but a restart of the server does (I'm running single server). No integrity checks are failing.

This sounds like a bug, the internal database references should be updated automatically and should be accurate. You'd best send this through to support and get the devs to have a look at it.

Could you clarify what you mean by "the database references were deleted along with the original mimic"?

What is referencing what that you think is missing?

References are automatically managed by the database so if you're doing Display References on an object and it is showing none then no object is referencing it directly (script can, those references don't get calculated). That would mean if you're talking animations on a mimic they might not be working.

Hi Adam thanks for responding - will try to clarify

Mimic X contains an embedded mimic object (mimic object Y), which is an embedded instance of mimic Z.

"Display references" shows that mimic Z is referenced from mimic X.

Mimic Z is deleted from the database. Embedded mimic object Y still exists but is now in error since it cannot find it's master mimic object.

"Display references" no longer shows that mimic Z is referenced from mimic X.
A new instance of mimic Z is imported from a different instance of the database.

Embedded mimic object Y can now see it's master (mimic Z) and is displayed correctly.

However, "Display references" still shows that mimic Z is not referenced from mimic X (despite the fact that there is an embedded mimic object (Y) on mimic Z which uses mimic X as it's master.

Therefore mimic X is identical in nature to what it was at start (with an embedded mimic Y which is an instance of mimic Z), only now, there is no database reference (where there previously was).
