Hey all....
Old and Retired... just enjoying life...
I recently acquired a used APC SUA2200XL.
I've replaced the batteries, and have set it up to protect my computer desk and home entertainment system.
And while it works as intended in this basic setup, I wonder if I would be able to use the PowerChute software to do a controlled shutdown if power is out too long?
Seems there is a free Home Edition, but will it work with a 2200XL?
Or do I need the Business Edition (but I assume it's not free)?

Depending on the OS, you need PowerChute Business Edition, and it is free to download from apc.com or se.com.

I had found and downloaded the business edition a few days back, and as I was starting to install, it popped up the usual legal jargon, but was confusing as it referred to a paid license for the business edition, and while there is a free home edition, it seemed that it was not applicable to the smart ups's....
hence my original question....
and as said, old and retired, which equates to "fixed income".
I don't want to get forced into purchasing a license just to play around with an obsolete ups...

Also, I did find a user manual on the SE website, but I seem to be having trouble finding documentation on the communication ports/wiring,
There is a 9-pin serial port, and RJ45 jack marked as USB, so I assume there is some funky USB adapter cable needed?
Does the serial just need the typical 2, 3, 5 connections, or does it need all 9 pins connected?
And, once I have it connected by serial or USB, will the PowerChute program automatically find the UPS, or is there configuration that needs to happen?

Not sure which version of PowerChute you downloaded but it has always been a free. There was a one time a version that would monitor 25 Agents/UPS from a single console but that was discontinued some time ago. The latest version 10.0.5 is free. Here is a link.
As for connections, there should be a 9 pin serial and RJ50 connectors. The serial cable SKU is 940-0024. Here is a link to the serial cable. https://www.se.com/ww/en/product/940-0024/ups-communications-cable-smart-signalling/
The USB cable SKU us AP9827 Here's a link https://www.apc.com/shop/bg/en/products/UPS-Communications-Cable-Simple-Signalling-USB-to-RJ45/P-AP9...
If you install PowerChute Business Edition on a Windows OS it should automatically discover the UPS. If it does not when asked select UPS type B and the cable type.

so, can anyone answer my questions please?
Does the serial just need the typical 2, 3, 5 connections, or does it need all 9 pins connected?
@BillP, your reply shows the standard stock cable...
I will have to run a 50ft cable between my UPS and PC...
So, is this serial connection just a typical 3-wire serial cable, or does it require more conductors to do some special magic???
And I read in a PowerChute manual for ver 9.5.1;
"PowerChute Business Edition version 9.5 and higher (9.5+) does not have a PowerChute console or
server. PowerChute Business Edition version 9.5+ uses SNMP to integrate with your chosen Network
Management System (NMS) for the discovery, monitoring and control previously provided by the
PowerChute Business Edition console and server."
So what exactly does this mean in layman's terms, I mean I have a bit of experience helping out the IT dept back when I was working, but now that I'm retired I do not have these technical resources....
Does this mean I need to digress back to an earlier version??

The cables are proprietary. e.g., they have specific pin crossovers. We do not offer the pin info but if you search the web you will find the information.
As for the length, the cables we offer are 8 or 15 feet.
To access the new version of the PowerChute Agent you use a web browser. After installing the software open a browser and enter the PC IP address:6547 Example https://192.168.0.100:6547 PowerChute communicates using HTTPS over port 6547.
There are youtube videos that show how to access the PowerChute Agent web interface.
