I have an older model of APC backup. I decided to change the battery and it wont come out of the machine. Are there any tricks to getting it out? The markings on the box are Back-UPS 400. The battery also looks to be bulging a bit. APC told me to replace it, but its perfectly good and I already have the battery to replace it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have a serial number off of the UPS? Some of our older models, which the BackUPS 400 is included, did not have specific user replaceable batteries. This means the UPS had an imbedded battery and when that battery died, the UPS needed to be replaced.
If the battery has swollen into the UPS, then there may not be anything we can do. You may want to return the replacement battery you purchased and consider trading in your 400 for a discount on a brand new UPS through our TradeUPS program.
Thanks.

If your battery is buldging it means that it had overheated at some point, and started swelling. Generally, swollen batteries are caused by ignored Replace Battery Alarms, or a UPS being used in a very warm environment. If the UPS is still in use, I would recommend taking it out of service immediately so that it doesn't swell anymore. If left running in this condition, the heat and preasure inside the battery could potentially build up, and cause the battery to vent. You will know if this happens because of the strong sulfur smell. Its not pleasent to say the least.
Once a battery is swollen, it can be very difficult, if not impossile, to remove it from the UPS. If the battery is still warm/hot, you may be able to remove it from service, and hope the battery contracts a bit as it cools, but if it doesn't come out through the battery door, you are out of luck. The UPSs chassis are rivited. My suggestion would be to replace the entire UPS.
