So, I got a 9631 because it seemed like the right thing. I've got a SmartUPS1000 with one of those smart-slots and I thought to myself why not?
Did the whole disconnect thing.....network , mains, battery. plugged it in....nothing. No lights... no activity on the switch.
Power on... everything working but no network connection to the NMC. Dead as a dodo.
" Ok, must be just a bad card."
Tell the purchasing agent to get me another. Lets see if it's just a 'out of box' DOA!
Next one arrives. same thing. Must be me, right? Wrong!
Spent the last two hours reading and following the instructions. These things are just dead!
Called the purchasing agent.
So now I'm waiting a decent interval for someone from APC (actually anyone who may know why...) to tell me the silly thing I should have known to do when I plugged it in!
After all it must be something silly...
Probably won't wait long!

ok, it is not SMT or SMX. if it was, the model would be SMT1000 or SMX1000 versus SUA1000.
id have to assume theres a problem with your smart slot if you get no status or link LED with two cards. do you have another UPS to try these two cards in? the connection internally between the UPS electronics and smart slot housing can become loose as well so then the slot will not power any accessories.

what model smart UPS 1000 is it? is it SMT1000 or SMX1000? does the UPS have an LCD on the front? i will help you with this. i agree, we must be missing something as these rarely fail as they don't have any moving parts. when they do fail its usually when a capacitor or something is broken off.
anyways, the network jack has a status LED on the right hand side and a link LED on the other side. no activity on those when inserted into the UPS and the UPS is turned on?

Model SUA1000 from nameplate on back. How can I tell if it is an SMX or SMT ?
Plenty of leds on the front.
no lights on either NMC of any type at any time.
Switch is proven working at 10, 100 & 1G.
Cable is proven working on same switch with different device and another cat6 does not work either.

That's my working theory.
I tried one of the 9631's and another type 1 NMC card I have laying around in a known good SmartUPS1500 and they both work fine. This seems to confirm that my UPS' backplane is 'duff'.
Gotta say though that there need to be better QA/QC on this stuff because we depend on UPS.
We spend a ton of money to be assured that our stuff stays up. And I'm not talking about ups1000 or ups1500.
I will send this ups back as a defective unit even if its out of warranty and I will see what they say.
Lets just say I expect customer service this time!
Thanks for your input. Stay safe!

The SUA1000 UPS do have a two-year warranty on it. If you want you could post the serial number of the unit and we could give you an estimate of how old the unit is.

Update:
I went out and got another couple of the UPS. This time the SmartUPS1500 which seem a little better designed not to mention heavier. Both my 9631 cards work in the one SmartUPS1500 I have access to.
I could be wrong, but the engineer in me says that the base Smart UPS1000 (one of three all of which were dead to my cards) was DOA. Not good. Not in this economy.
Thank you for the suggestion about sending in the serial number to get a refund or a replacement.
We will talk again!
