Hello all
How do you determine the heat load per server or per rack ? I see a lot of people using the manufactures max wattage numbers for a device but that seems high. For example Dells rack config lists the dell poweredge 2950 at 312 watts\thermal load with 1 drive and 393 watts with 8 drives yet the specs on the server show that they are configured with a 750 max watt power supply. Is there a standard forumla that dell is using to get 312+ watts from the 750 watt PS ?

Obviously in most cases the system isn't going to pull the full capacity of the Power Supply. The larger power supply may just account safely for inrush current during start and then idles out at the 312 range.
All in all, the best resource for you in this case would be Dell to respond back to your request on how they get that value.
