It seems that the "APC" market is focused soley on the computer market. Is there some reason that APC unit can't be used for other things, like general home backup lighting?

you can use it for whatever you want - phones, stereos, battery chargers, etc as long as you dont overload it or anything.
i think most of the stuff is geared towards computers because when you have those momentary power blips, people dont want to lose data.
i dont think a lot of people care if there lights go on RIGHT away or if they are interrupted because if they have a generator, they will come on eventually. lights arent generally temperamental so i mean they can turn off and turn on and it doesnt matter if they have a 5 minute gap where a computer isnt like that. power goes out, it turns off immediately and theres potential data loss/damage.
that is what i think but yeah you can use it for lighting i guess?
