I need to replace battery on APC XS 1500 and am totally nontechnical. The how-to video looks easy but I read about the need to reset battery with Power Chute software which I don't have. I have a Mac. Can anyone advise how to do this - or point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance.

Resetting the battery replacement date is recommended but not required, especially if you don't notice any problems.
Even when PowerChute Personal Edition for Macintosh still existed, it didn't have the option you'd take to tell the UPS that its batteries had been replaced.
If you want to tell the UPS that you have changed the batteries, the easiest thing you could do would be to take it to someone with a PC running Windows and have them install PowerChute Personal Edition temporarily to make the change. This setting is stored in a permanent memory within the UPS, so it will not go away or become lost when you take it back to your computer. You can replace the batteries and use the UPS safely until it would be convenient for you to do this.
On a Macintosh the only other options you'd have would be either apcupsd or Network UPS Tools, and neither are well suited to those without a technical background.
