I received a connection cord with ns1050 that has USB to ethernet. Thought i could extend distance using cat 5 ethernet but when I installed PowerChute Personal Edition the software could not find ups. Is the cat 5 not compatible with supplied cord? If so what type cable can be used to extend communication?

The cable has a special proprietary pinout on it even though it uses an RJ-45 ethernet connector. Even though technically APC doesn't recommend it, you might try extending it on the other end, maybe using a USB hub to give you a little extra cable to work with. You might encounter problems with that though it if the hub isnt externally powered and you have a lot of devices plugged into it.
