We have 2 apc bvx1200Li-ms, after a strong hit us typhoon we attached 2 unit of 12v battery to make it work longer, however after 2 or 3 hours of working both APC AUTO SHUT OFF.

And we have to Turn it On again which is annoying.

Hi Mellx1,

It is not recommended to connect additional batteries to this UPS. The unit has not been tested in this way and may not work properly.

APC UPS with extended battery pack support are the following series: SMX, SRT, SRV, SU, SUA, SUM, SURT, SURTA, SURTD, etc.

The problem you run into with a DIY solution like yours is several fold.

Charger: All units are designed with a charging circuit rated for the battery pack installed to achieve proper charging / time.

Operational Runtime: Depending upon the model and firmware installed. The system may not see or know the extra battery capacity you have added. As such when the system reaches its factory depletion point it will begin the shutdown process.

Battery Calibration: As stated up above some units will shutdown. While others can be fooled by manually running a battery calibration. You may try this to see if this allows you to extend the operational runtime.

Cold Start: Some of the Enterprise UPS allow cold start ability. Meaning the system can be turned on without AC Mains while on battery.

Hot Swap: Many Enterprise UPS allow removing the primary battery (RBC) from the system while on AC Mains without impacting the connected loads.

Having both of these features mean the system can be (Turned On) without a battery being connected / present.

If your system can’t be turned on without a battery connected- Stop. If you can’t turn the unit on while AC Mains is disconnected - Stop!
