I have a BackUPS ES550R.
this is thunderstorm season so I tend to unplug most electrical stuff from the outlets when its gonna storm (which is like almost every day). the sequence is this:
shut off speakers and inkjet printer (on surge only side)
shut down computer/turn off monitor (UPS side)
turn off UPS via button (beeps once, green light goes out)
unplug UPS from wall
about a minute or so after unplugging the UPS from the wall outlet it give a halfhearted strangled chirp.
is this normal?

You can discuss that with whomever you speak on the phone. They can probably expedite the shipping and provide a return label, but that's not my call.
But yes, it's under warranty.
And the phones are open til 8pm EST.

Dave,
I tried to test this and logically, I don't believe it's possible. Can you try the same test again and do it two times.
The first time, do the exact same procedure to verify that the chirp happens around 30 seconds after everything's off.
The second time, do the exact same procedure, only this time, disconnect the battery.
Let us know what you find.

will do, got a major college test coming up tomorrow (thursday) so Im a studying fool right now.. Ill do it thursday afternoon when I get home.
by disconnect the battery you mean just pull one of the battery leads right? (just to make sure I do it right)
the chirp is a fairly weak sound, nothing volume or duration wise like the normal beep sound.

OK heres the test results. did it a few ways.
BATTERY IN:
power off all devices. power off UPS via button (one beep, green light goes out). unplug UPS. about 20-30 seconds later, it chirps.
then I plugged it back in, turned the UPS on for one minute (did NOT turn on the computer/LCD though), turned it off (via button, again one beep, green light went out), unplugged it. 20-30 seconds later, chirp.
then I plugged UPS in for one minute, but left it OFF, unplugged it. 20-30 seconds later, chirp.
so with the battery in, whether its been on or off, all I have to do to get the chirp is unplug it and wait.
BATTERY DISCONNECTED:
plugged it in, IMMEDIATE chirp. didnt turn UPS on, just unplugged it. IMMEDIATE chirp. did that a couple times, same result, in fact it gives the same chirp on plugging it in as it does unplugging, and it is immediately when plugged in or unplugged, no delay.
I did not turn it on with the battery disconnected.
lemme know if you want me to try anything else. I can also email you a sound clip of it if you would like. this is very repeatable and it does this every time without fail.
BTW back (underside) of unit says BE550R, front (top) says Back-UPS ES 550. I sorta mixed the 2 together when I posted originally, so if thats part of the problem, sorry.

Dave,
I think there was a misunderstanding.
When I meant to try it with the battery disconnected, I meant after you power everything off, disconnect the lead. I did not mean try the entire test with the battery disconnected. That's going to prove nothing to us other than that the audible tone for battery disconnected works.
Could you please try again?
Or am I reading your reply wrong?

oops 🙂 I misunderstood.
"I meant after you power everything off, disconnect the lead."
OK, so leave it plugged in, turn UPS off, and disconnect the battery?
hope so, here goes... BRB

Sweet....
Now is the UPS in warranty? Because I don't think it should be chirping at all after a total power off of the UPS. If it's covered (or if you want to post the first 6 on the serial number for us to verify), contact support and get that puppy replaced.

should be I just bought it about a month ago and registered online.
here are the 1st 6 digits:
3B0752
rats, I was hoping it was normal. does APC pay shipping both ways? whats the turn around time?
it seems to run normal, could this be a safety hazard or damage my computer if I leave it be for now?
it was only $40 at costco and since we have frequent power outages Id hate to be without it for any length of time. I may just buy another one if its gonna take a while.
