I installed a Back-UPS RS 1500 and installed the PowerChute Personal Edition software. However, I discovered that the software does not have the capability to send an e-mail out when the unit goes on battery power. I was previously familiar with this feature, but come to find that only the SmartUPS line support it at this point via Business Edition. I tried installing Business Edition, but find that my UPS is not supported, as I am using the USB connection for communication of status to the PC. I have also tried to see if I could setup an event trigger, but status message are no longer written to the Windows Event Log either. Any other ideas?

using native support, you can use that original cable no problem - the RJ45 to USB.
[Here is the link you are hopefully looking for|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2616] - these are the events that powerchute can create.
i do not have the events that native support can create in the operating system event viewer. i couldnt find a comprehensive list either..but it works with the uninterruptible power supply service in windows.

powerchute business edition is only compatible with certain Back UPS via simple signaling. even that will only tell you when the UPS is "online" or "on battery." The UPS will tell the computer when to shutdown based on low battery signaling time, that is about it. no voltages or runtime reported. so at least with personal edition you can see some informative information.
to even get that going, you will need to use an RJ-45 -> Serial cable. the cable you received with the Back UPS (940-0127E or AP9827) can only be used with Powerchute personal edition and a Back UPS.
you can request this cable - 940-0128D from tech support via email or phone (800-890-4272). it is the 940-0128D cable. then just download and install the powerchute business edition agent (you can install server and console if you are going to monitor more than one UPS with business edition).
since the UPS can only tell you when it has a low battery, it cant tell the computer and software to send an email when it goes on battery. you can send notifications (via messaging service) i believe only when the UPS loses communication..MAYBE when its shutting down..with that i am not 100% sure.

Just a clarification/correction: In Simple Signalling a UPS will report only its state, such as on-line, on-battery, low battery, etc.
Therefore, you will be notified when the UPS goes on-battery. From this you can create emails and other triggers off this on-battery event as you wish.

To be brutally honesty, the days of the 128d cable are over.
We shouldn't be pushing for a customer to get one from tech support, they should be buying the correct UPS with accompanying software to meet their needs.
Keep in mind that almost all new gen Back-UPS do not work with PCBE.

Actually, it is better to prepare a solution first. However, if there is the UPS, I would use native power options to run a command file. Please note the messages above as the nativa power options is not a very good way for emails.

Yes this is true.
it is a workaround and does have reduced functionality. do they still include the cards in the box to request this cable via snail mail? maybe that has stopped as well.

If I use the native options in the control panel, can I use existing USB connection to the UPS, or do I still need the RJ-45 to serial connection? Also, is there a reference to the Event IDs that are created when events occur (e.g. low battery, etc.) somewhere?
