Without realizing the potential limitation, I recently purchased the XS 900. It met my power needs yet I thought I would be able to receive an e-mail alert when the electrical power ceased and the backup took over. Is it possible to work around this issue by installing the Business Edition software rather than what came with the unit?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

yes, what you want as far as email with Business Edition and a Back UPS can be done if you get that cable. You should be able to set up email based on these events (I dont have this exact model available but I have another simple signaling UPS with PCBE installed):
* Low Battery
* Time On Battery Threshold Exceeded
* Power Failed
* Power Restored
* Shutdown Cancelled
* Shutdown In Progress
* Communication Established
* Monitoring Started
* Monitoring Stopped
* Administrative Shutdown Scheduled
* Administrative Shutdown Pending
* Administrative Shutdown Cancelled
The computer will shutdown when a "low battery" period is reached which by default is when 2 minutes of runtime remaining. The computer receives a signal from the UPS that the low battery point has been reached.

i picKed a winna,
Thank you. If I understand correctly, the primary function I am seeking (e-mail notification if the power goes out and the UPS takes over) would be met by using the suggested cable in conjuction with the Business Edition application.
During the winter months in NH, we are apt to have power outages. Having two Savannah kittens, low temperatures don't mix with them. So, with the purchase of the UPS I thought I would be able to solve/minimize two problems at the same time. My computer, etc. are now protected yet the two little girls aren't.
Unless I can procure the cable locally, I'll order via your info.
Thanks again,
Steve

even though it is not recommended to use business edition with a Back UPS because of the lack of information provided through the interface, it will allow you to set it up and configure email. Business Edition with a Back UPS operates in simple signaling mode meaning the UPS only can tell the software that it has a low battery and is time to shutdown. You will not be able to see any data such as the incoming line voltage, battery charge, etc only if the UPS is "online" or "on battery." If that is okay with you, you can contact APC support for the RJ-45 to DB9 cable needed, part # 940-0128 which will replace the cable provided with the unit (the RJ-45 to USB). When you set up business edition, you will have to tell it you are using a Back UPS in simple signaling mode.
let me know if you have any other questions 🙂
