I just bought the XS 900 for my new Dell Studio XPS 435T. I have the computer, monitor, wireless router and cablem modem connected to back-up. The printer is connected to the surge outlet.
When I run a self-test from the software, the online light flashes, then the battery light comes on and my computer shuts down and re-boots, the green online light comes back on. No self test is recorded in the software.
I tried flipping my breaker, same thing happens. Am I missing something here? This is my first back-up, I have only used surge protectors in the past.

Hi Randy,
I believe that system comes with a Power Factor Corrected power supply. An easy way to tell is if the computer is the only thing that turns off and the monitor stays on. If this is the case you may need a UPS that provides a pure sine wave. I would check again to see if anything else turns off when you do a self test and if it does check out this document about selecting a UPS for a computer with a PFC power supply, http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/RMUZ-7DTKRC_R1_EN.pdf.

I was reading the other thread about this same problem and my computer does exactly what his does. The online light changes to battery the computer shuts down, the monitor goes to sleep mode and the the system reboots back to online. I was just going to keep it and use as a surge protector, but when I trip the breaker the computer power button just flashes and makes a sound like a fan running, I'm afraid I might screw my computer up. I sent Dell an e-mail to check on power supply. I guess this is what I get for not doing my homework. I bought it from Best Buy and I doubt they will take it back since I don't have the box anymore. Oh well, I didn't really need the back-up, just the surge protection, just figured why not. Anybody want to buy one cheap? The Smart UPS is a little more than I want to pay. Thanks for help.

Hi Randy,
This defiantly sounds like a PFC issue. When you contact Dell ask them to double check and see if your computer has a PFC PSU. If it does you will most likely want to go with a pure sine wave UPS from the Smart-UPS SUA line. If Best Buy wont take it back you can always use it for the Trade-UPS program to get a discount on a Smart-UPS, http://www.apc.com/buy/index.cfm. This might get the Smart-UPS into the price range you are looking at.
