Hi everyone,
I am putting the final touches to a Home/Small Office Network and want to incorporate a proper UPS in the mix. I have looked at many models but am unsure which one will work "as expected". Here are my requirements in terms of the types of devices that would either be connected on the battery back-up or just surge protection outlets:
โข 1 x NAS Device: My first priority is to provide protection to the newly acquired QNAP TS-459 PRO network access storage server. The unit is currently equipped with 2 X 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green SATA drives but may expand to add another 2 X 2 TB at a later stage. The QNAP TS-459 PRO specโs are saying that it consumes between 19 W (in sleep mode) to 35 W (in operation) with 2 drivesโฆand somewhere around 48 W for 4 drives. My goal is to set-it-up so that the TS-459 PRO can initiate a proper shutdown in case of a power outage to avoid any possible data corruption. I do not need the TS-459 to stay on for any extended period โฆrather simply to shut it down to protect the data. The QNAP WebSite only lists one model in the Back-UPS ES 500 USB series which is discontinued! The other options are for a few much more expansive Smart-UPS series that I would like to avoid if possible ( see here: [http://www.qnap.com/pro_compatibility_ups.asp]). Note: The LAN users have laptops so they can continue to work โlocallyโ without accessing the QNAP device during the outage. Finding a UPS that interfaces with it for a proper shutdown is a MUST.
โข 1 x Internet Cable and Telephony Modem (VoIP): This is a Touchtone TM502G. It delivers Internet and VoIP. Itโs specโs state that it has its own 5 hrs of battery back-up built-in! However, I would like to run this device from the UPS battery back-up to further extend its available time. This unit has been used for 2+ yrs and I am unsure of how long it could really last on its own autonomy. This one is a nice-to-have to connect to battery back-up.
โข 1 x WiFi โNโ Router for Internet Access: The unit is a Netgear RangeMax. Itโs power adapter says that it has an input of 100-240V ~ 50/60 Hz and 0.8A. I would like to connect this device to the battery-powered outlets. This could simply run as long as the battery lasts.
โข 1 x WiFi โGโ Router also for Internet access: Some network clients only support G and I would need this Linksys WRT54G device also connected to a battery-powered outlet. I suppose its power draw would be similar to the other router above. This could simply run as long as the battery lasts.
โข There MAY be the addition of a PC at a later stage. However, this would be a nice-to-have and not necessarily a deciding factor if it pushes the UPS choice to be a lot more expansive.
โข 2 x Other Devices that would just need power surge outlets. These would be for chargers to a Wireless Home Phone and another one for a Mobile Phone.
This should cover my UPS needs. After looking at many possible options, I have somewhat narrowed it down to a price range under $ 250.00 if possible. This includes such models as : BE750G-CN , BR800BLK , BR1200 and BR1300LCD. However, I remain unsure which of these will satisfy the needs listed above.
I would definitely appreciate some guidance on the key differentiating features/models that could be valid candidates. ๐

Thnaks Buzz,
Your explanation about the "naming convention" really helped. I will now focus my search intot the "{color:#000080}RS family{color}" (part number starts {color:#0000ff}BR{color}).
Appreciate your input.

I know someone with a QNAP and I don't think it likes the Back-UPS ES family (anything starting BE). Anything in the [RS family|http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=23] (part number starts BR) should work great though. The only problem is determining how much power you need, especially for the "unknown" potential computer. I would think the [BR800BLK|http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR800BLK] would give you enough space (I have a desktop computer, router, external drive, monitor on mine and it pulls like 300w max), plus some extra breathing room for when the drives are first spinning up.
However, it only has 4 battery backup outlets, so you'd have to either choose devices carefully or bump it up to the [BR1300LCD|http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR1300LCD], which has 6 battery backup outlets.
The native support for the QNAP should communicate with the Back-UPS just fine.
