What should i expect when a 1200W unit gets 1450W thrown at it whilst main power is available?

BX2200MI - max 1200W unit (line interactive)

Brought to safeguard a coffee machine electronics fed off genset power & for genset changeover where idle W (not making coffee) will be way below 1200W.

My thinking was i'm not going to using the coffee machine whilst the unit is running on battery so that unit should do BUT later i see there is an "online overload" alarm mentioned in the manual.

Whilst on mains power if the UPS is asked for 1450W passthru what's likely to happen?

a) online overload alarm but likely stay online or

b) likely pop the input circuit breaker

any thoughts please? - was like megabucks more to go to a higher rated unit

Hi, JohnG3

APC, SE, It is not recommended to connect a coffee maker to an APC UPS because most UPSs are not designed to handle the high power demands required by appliances that use resistors, such as coffee makers and toasters. Connecting a coffee maker could overload the UPS, damage it, and, in the worst case, cause a fire, since the UPS is only for use with critical computer equipment.

The maximum load you should connect based on the apparent or real load of a UPS would be 70/80% maximum.

A Type 3 surge protector (SPD) would be a more appropriate device to use instead of a UPS.

It goes without saying you’ll need to purchase a quality unit with the appropriate power / current rating / AWG gauge.

The vast majority of no name off shore products that you see on Amazon use 16 ~ 18 AWG. A 14 AWG is more than fine but highly suggest you purchase a unit that has 12 AWG so no issues meeting the 80% duty threshold especially on a 20 amp circuit.
