What is 'Load Current' in PCSS?

I have a Smart-UPS SUA1500I-IND that I have hooked up to my PC with the PCSS web application.

On the UPS Status page there is a category called 'Load Current' which usually displays a value of around 4-6 amps when the PC is on idle but shoots up to over 31 amps when the UPS is under a ~65% load (both on utility as well as battery power). Meaning around 650W of power draw (which I've verified through other applications).

I live in a country with a 230-240V grid. Even if the UPS were to be at the full rated 980W draw, it shouldn't even cross 6 amps at the input or output.

What exactly is this 'Load Current' measuring? Is it a faulty reading?

I'm not having any functional problems with this UPS to speak of.

This value is derived from the draw from all the connected loads on the output of the unit.

As you noted the current sensing on these units are less than accurate! 🤦‍♂️ Any current (amperes) below one amp will not register either or indicate erroneous values.

The only use is seeing values that remain consistent with the load you have connected. ☝️

Meaning, if whatever you have at idle always shows X amps - Fine. If that value is 2.5 amps just make a mental note / write it down and track that. Conversely, during peak usage if the value is 30 amps and always reflects this approx value - Fine.

The only important metrics that matter are the input / output voltage, frequency, battery voltage, and event data. 👍

In all cases the UPS should be monitored by a Syslog / NMS. As this provides better insight and long term tracking. 👍
