Hello,
I have a Smart-UPS 1400 XL 3U unit that is acting up. When I plug the unit in the wall, the alarm sounds continuously and all the LEDs are lit. The alarm only stops when I unplug the unit and press the off button. I have tried using the reset button in back, and other combinations of pressing the buttons, none of which helped. Inspecting the units internal battery, I see battery corrosion on both sides of the battery pack and it looks like the sides are bulging out. The battery pack is a genuine APC unit.
Could the battery swelling/acid account for the alarm sounding continuously? I tried to remove the battery, but it would not come out.
Thanks for any help!
Chip

sorry, just saw this message.
generally with a swollen battery, we'd make sure it is in a cooler environment (if not already) and then make sure that the batteries are disconnected to restrict any further charging. if the UPS was actively charging, sometimes putting a fan on the batteries allows them to cool enough to be removed from the system. depending on the UPS, sometimes the chassis or frame can be maneuvered to allow for removal of the batteries but unfortunately, if damage is beyond repair or they still do not come out, it'd have to be replaced or repaired by another method depending on what happened.
