UPS 500ES does not switch on, why

My UPS does'nt switch on when i press the on button, its like its dead or something. Only the surge protection outlet comes on when the unit is plugged in, but the other two outlets for backup is dead. the unit doesnt respond at all, no beeps, nothing. What seems to be wrong with it?

If you purchased this UPS within last three years, please contact the APC Customer Care Center at 1-800-800-4272 or http://www.apc.com/support/index.cfm to get the replacement unit under factory warranty.

Welcome to the APC Forum Alex.

In order for us to diagnose your problem we would be needing additional information from your end.
- What is the model and serial number of UPS?
- For how long have you been using this UPS?
- Do you have another UPS of the same model wherein we could swap the batteries?

Let us try to do the following steps: while the UPS is unplug press and hold the power button. You would normally hear a short and a long beep, once you hear that long beep release the button and the UPS should go to battery. Let us know what comes up on your UPS after doing this.

Hi, tried what you said by unplugging the UPS and pressing the button or holding it for some time. Its just dead - no response, doesnt beep or do anything. the only power available is from the 'surge protection' outlet. Removed the battery and connected a 12volt fan to it, the battery seems fine in that the fan works well. I dont have another UPS or another battery. any suggestions will be most welcome.
BTW the model is Back-UPS ES500, serial no BB0642002329
