Square wave inverter --> step sine wave UPS --> iMac
Hi,
Apologies if this has been answered before. I was getting confused with multiple responses and hence this post.
Facts:
1. My house has an APC HI800SX inverter (sq wave), the kind that makes the fans make a lot of noise.
2. I bought a small APC Back-UPS ES 650, for my 20 inch iMac (early 2009 model), router, modem etc. This UPS is connected to the main inverter.
3. When the main utility supplied electricity goes off, and my ES650 UPS got it's power from the 800SX inverter :-
i) the ES650 UPS made a continuous clicking sound (per advise in this post and the dealer, i turned the sensitivity to low, and that removed the sound)
Ii) a small fan connected to the ES650 UPS make the same sound, as when directly connected to the inverter (confirming the wave distortion)
iii) the iMac seems to run fine - no buzzing sound from it's back or any other visible/audible impact.
Question:
a. Should i leave this configuration as-is or should i invest in a pure sine wave inverter (to replace the square wave) for the main house, as is suggested in some of the posts - to protect the iMac long term and possibly other components in the house.
