Smart UPS 3000 how to communicate through serail port

OK,

I have not original cable for APC Smart UPS 3000. I guess it has to use the smart signalling UPS cable:
I have made my own cable according to the diagram given in:

Ok, I have used xp hyperterminal software to establish communication with 2400-8N1 xon\xoff. That way I could not establish commnication. I do not know what is wrong with procedure, because I have not resposne from apc.

What is wrong with my procedure?

No. My APC has a only backpanel piece if metal plate instead of NMC. Underneath, there are db9 and RJ-45 port with one LED (green at this moment).

i use a flow control of none..what type of response are you looking to get from the unit and why are you trying to accomplish? the simplest test would be to do a shift+Y command to see if you get an SM response to see if you get into simple signaling mode. pressing enter will not give you a response.

In fact I have found that my cable is right one. It is for smart signalling. I have tried as well with apc configuration wizard by remote (to detect newly connected apc on local internet) and by local. By local failed with message "Not able to open port". Shift Y does not generate any error message at all.

are you using the same XP laptop? the UPS by itself with no accessory install will only use 2400 baud rate and respond to shift Y. if there is no accessory installed, you will not get a response like you did with the one with the accessory installed. it may also be helpful to try and reboot the UPS or braindead it by turning it off and unplugging it from AC power then holding the off button for a few seconds until the UPS clicks and LEDs flash. then try again at 2400.

if you are getting errors about unable to open the com port, usually that indicates an issue with the serial port to me since when the UPS doesnt respond, usually it is something with the serial port on the computer because the serial port will at least open and the UPS just wouldnt respond.

Ok,

I have apc Smart UPS 750 and cable from APC. I have to set up an IP addresse of that UPS to be able to use web to monitor its log. So it works. 2400-8-N-1 Flow control (Xon/Xoff). I did not have any problem to use hyperterminal fom Xp of an laptop.

The problem is with APC smart UPS 3000 for the same purpose. Same cable, and every combination with 9600/2400/8-n-1 gives no response through hyperterminal with that apc! Ok, I have read documentation and that points out apc smart ups 3000 use smart signalling insterad of dumb signalling. I have google so far for the pinout of an APC cable for smart UPS signalling. I used the first diagram-pinout. Hyperterminal indicated that I am connected with the UPS, but without response from apc when I press return. It seems to be that manually made cable is not the right one.

What shall I do?

1. There is a green LED light very close to com3 db socket of apc smart UPS 3000 (it is not tower). Does it mean that there is NMC installed on that UPS?
2. My laptop (XP operating system) established serial communication with UPS through Hyperterminal. For APC Smart UPS 760 everything is as expected. I am able through "network" menu to change UPS IP addresses without any problem. Serial com setup is 2400/8/n/1 with software flow control.
Same Laptop goes to production APC Smart UPS 300 with serial com setup 2400/8/N/1 without software control. Hyperterminal shows connected, but I can not see anything ar all at response. Same thing with Shift Y or Shift A (no response at all). Mesage "com port could not be opened" is generated through program APC Device IP configuration wizard.

For APC smart UPS I need only web interface for monitoring, and mail for alerting of some bad condituions and errors.

3. You maintoned with or without NMC, I do not know whether there is or not NMC on APC 750 , but I can see there is RJ45 connecor on the back panel for TCP/IP communication which works. The same is for APC 3000.

4.What do you mena UPS with accessories installed?

ok, if you are seeing a DB9 port on the back of the UPS and an RJ-45 port, it must have an accessory installed. do you see anything similar on the back of the UPS to this? http://www.apc.com/products/moreimages.cfm?partnum=AP9617&type=Front%20Left
