Putting BR900G-GR upside down

Hello,

I'm trying to make a BR900G-GR (BACK-UPS 900VA) to fit in a small space. It would work if I could put the UPS on it's side (front panel down), like this:

However, I'm wondering if this is safe to do, e.g. would it hurt the battery if I place it like this?

Hello Sebastian,

The electronics wont care about orientation as far as I know.

The batteries may be a different story.   AGM batteries probably are fine in any orientation.   Sealed Lead Acid batteries (SLA) might prefer to be oriented with the terminals facing up.   Brand new SLA batteries actually are quite "dry" inside if you open them but they are not quite as dry as AGM batteries and it's possible some liquid could move to the empty space between the top of the battery and the plates, leaving the plates "dryer".

Don't forget about cooling requirements.

Except for convection cooling perhaps (which I assume your last line covers).

CSB (the OEM battery supplier for most APC UPS I've worked with) say their batteries are ok in most orientations (Quote from their sales blurb) :

With an isolated seal, it is not limited to direction or position in place.

It can be put in a horizontal way, vertical way and side way.

Completely upside down isn't generally done as any free liquid (of which there really isn't) will migrate into the vent cap, and any venting event will eject the liquid. Other than that, I've seen SLAs used almost any which way.
