I have just got my new Back-UPS RS800 with software for Windows Vista but I have Windows 7. Does anylone know if you can use the Vista version or where you can download for 7?

i dont think this is the same issue at all..it seems to me that you installed the software and the software is reporting that your UPS has an internal communications fault - thus telling you there is some type of hardware fault with the UPS. i'd suggest you contact APC support because I suspect there to be a possible issue here which may require replacement of the UPS, rather than there being a problem with the software installation on windows 7.
if it was a software installation issue, you would get a message stating that powerchute cannot communicate with the UPS or something similar, not internal communications fault. i agree that the messages could certainly be more descriptive.

you can use powerchute personal edition 3.0, which is available for download. it should indicate it is supported by windows 7 too?

I have installed Powerchute personal edition v3, and have the same issue with a new install of windows 7 ultimate and Powerchute communications fault.
It's not a firewall issue as I have not installed one yet and windows firewall is disabled for the testing duration. So I'm still scratching my head as to why my Back-UPS RS 800 is showing an 'internal communications fault' however that message if examined would actually indicate the fault lay with the device's internal software/firmware and not a communications issue with windows.
Windows 7 is quite able to handle the device without the Powerchute software, however one does not get the addition information about usage and the like.
One last annoying aspect of the UPS is that every 30 seconds or so it sounds a default system exclamation 'ding' over all/any sounds playing, HOW BLOODY ANNOYING! especially when under examination there is no reported reason for the warning sound, apart from the apparently erroneous software/firmware.
