I removed the battery cartridge on the XS 900. I attached the single red cable that was unattched and it sparked. The unit was NOT plugged in. I inserted the cartridge and closed the case and then plugged the unit in. About 5 minutes later the red overload light came on along with the continuous tone that could NOT be turned off until I pressed the buttons on the front.
When I plug it back in the overload light comes back on and the tone returns. Nothing is plugged into the thing.
What gives?
John

Hello,
You may want to test the unit, to make sure its working. When you have a minute, power off your computer but leave some equipment plugged in, so that it has a load to test with. Pull the plug on the Back UPS so that it switches to battery. As long as it switches to battery, you should be all set. Plug the Back UPS back in and monitor the unit for the next week or two and make sure it doesn't give any more overload indicators.
The spark that you saw when you connected the battery, how big was it? Did it come from the battery terminals, connectors, outlets?

I had to pull the battery cartridge and remove and then reseat the cable to stop the chirp. An overnight charge has appeared to do the trick though I am perplexed.
Thanks for your response.

Manual says "small sparks" are normal. On Smart-UPS, it's not unusual to hear a rather loud pop with spark when the unit is energized after the unit was sitting around completely dead for months.
There are a few hefty input smoothing capacitors on the board right at the battery cable connection before the main inverter MOSFETs. If they're discharged (new shipment, sat dead for a while) they'll pull a large current and cause the spark. It's completely normal.

Yep, KVAr is totaly on the money here. I also had a backups unit do the same, and alarming as it is, its also pretty normal. The unit works fine and does what its supposed to.
If you notice anything strange later however please feel free to call tech support.
:)

yeah another thing you can do to test if your unit is working is do a self-test, in which you can keep your computer powered up, and all you do is push the power button in and hold it until you hear 2 beeps. once the second beep starts, release the power button and the green light will start to blink, then the yellow light will turn on and turn off and the green light will go solid. If something other than this happens, call tech support.
