New battery, but only 3-5 min runtime

We have an APC Back-UPS Pro 700. It's battery went bad so we bought a new one. After installing it we noticed there was only a 3-5 minute runtime even though the load is only around 75w (one Dell workstation connected).

Is there something wrong with the unit ,the battery, something else?

I have come across some third party batteries that don't perform very well. Most are fine.

I have also found that sometimes those particular Back-UPS models (and their siblings, the 1000 to 1500VA models) sometimes need a little prodding to reset their calibration data. Within PowerChute, under the "Run Self Test" item, there is a button to indicate that you've replaced the battery. If you haven't done so, click it and affirm that you wish to update the battery installation date.

This will also reset the battery calibration data.

Hi Damon,

If the run time used to be higher @the same load, with the previous battery (when that one was new), then a run time calibration could help the UPS display the correct run time.

Manual Calibration:

  • Stop the Power Chute software from running and disconnect the USB cable.
  • There must be at least a 30% load attached to the UPS during this procedure, and this load cannot fluctuate more than +/- 5%.
  • Attach a non-critical load to the UPS and then force the UPS on battery by disconnecting it from utility power
  • Allow the unit to run on battery until it turns off completely. The load attached to the UPS will turn off.
  • If the Load is not at least 30% or if the calibration is ended before the UPS drops the load, the calibration will not work.
  • Plug the UPS back into the wall outlet and allow it to recharge (preferably turned off).

William...you're a life saver! That did the trick, I'm back up to 45 minutes of runtime.

Thanks!
