I have had an XS-1500 for several years. Recently it started double-chirping about once a second and the battery charging indicator was empty and flashing. Note, there was no indication of bad battery. I have read that the flashing empty charging outline indicates that the battery is not recognized as connected by the device. I bought new batteries and replaced them. Everything seemed fine for a day or two, then things went back to how they were before. I checked the connections on the batteries and reset the device. Again it looked good for a while, then failed in the same way. I turned the unit on its side in preparation to remove the batteries again, and it started working normally (battery showing full charge, not flashing). Since then I have been watching and exercising the unit. Sometimes the self-test runs correctly and will power the load, sometimes after the self-test, the battery charge indicator will be empty and flashing, or partially empty.
The behavior of this unit seems to be inconsistent and flaky. I don't think it's the batteries. Seems more like a loose wire somewhere.
The question is can this unit be repaired, if so how?

With power disconnected and the unit discharged (hold down the power button with AC input and batteries removed), you could inspect the contacts where the batteries plug in. There is some amount of springiness to the terminals and one of them could have become dislodged or pushed out of place.
