New UPS 30VA - BE350G

This was originally posted on APC forums on 7/28/2016

I just purchased a new BE350G - 350V UPS.

I purchased it because I have a mobile AC unit in my room and when the AC turns on, it draws so much current the light flickers a little bit.

I wanted to product my computer, so I purchased this UPS hoping it would help with the current draw.  Now when the AC unit turns on, sometimes my computer turns off/restarts!

I set the voltage sensitivity to low (amber) but I'm not sure what else I'm suppose to do.

You and your computer equipment will both be a lot happier with something like a 1000 VA or larger Back-UPS.

The larger models also have the added capability of being able to regulate low or high incoming voltage without having to switch over to and use up the battery.

The BE350G is not enough UPS for a computer, unless said computer is extremely energy efficient. It also lacks a communication port that would enable your computer to be safely shut down when you are not around.

Some computer power supplies are not compatible with the modified sine wave that these UPSes output when running from battery. A common sign of this is a sudden shutdown when the UPS switches to battery.

I would propose a test: shut down your computer safely, unplug the UPS from the wall outlet and then plug it in to a switched outlet strip. Plug the outlet strip into the wall outlet. Turn the outlet strip, UPS and computer back on, let the computer finish starting up and when it has, turn the switch on the outlet strip off. If the computer shuts off or restarts when the UPS kicks in, you're probably dealing with a power supply that can't handle the UPS's output characteristics when it is on battery.

In that case, you'll need a different computer power supply or a UPS that outputs a true sine wave, such as the APC Smart-UPS 750 and greater.

The BE350G can supply up to 200W. If your circuits are 120V, that's 200W/120V = 1.7A max. You might want to compare that with the maximum current your computer needs.

Ah shoot.  Makes sense.

I did some testing, I just hooked up the computer's PSU to the UPS, before I had the dual monitors plugged into the UPS as well.

When the computer is idling/light work (excel, outlook, internet browsing) it's fine when the AC flicks on.

But when the graphics card is running at full draw - the computer shuts off when the AC flicks on.

I am using a Corsair 650 Watt power supply.

I don't know how many amps it's pulling, but I'm assuming it's much larger than 1.7A.

So I'll either have to keep the AC off/running while the graphics card is on - or get a better UPS.
