Hi all,
I am looking for a solution, hopefully I am coming to the right place. I work for a fairly large school district and am responsible for around 40 point of sale PCs for the food service system. I need some sort of battery solution to allow a PC to run on for around two hours (without the constant beep of a backup) and then recharge when it get put away for the day.
Can anyone offer any ideas that might solve this?

Hello,
If you're looking at overall power consumption with 40 PC's, which usually are around 350 Watts max, thats a 14KW estimated capacity. The ideal solution would be to have one single UPS source that has its output hooked to a panel, where 40 circuits are pulled off to power the PC's. Again, this load is just an estimate. If you are also looking for 2 hours of runtime, then you will need a large amount of extra batteries in the system.
The solution depends on what input power you can get to the UPS. If you could get 208V 3-Phase power to a UPS, then our Symmetra PX line would be the most ideal solution. One centralized UPS system powering all 40 PC's through a panel and its branch circuits. You can add battery cabinets as needed to increase runtime and the PX is 20KW scalable to 80KW for future expansion.

If you are looking to do one PC to one UPS, or several PC's to one UPS, then the SmartUPS XL line would be the ideal solution. This would mean multiple units spread across your setup, but they also have the capability to add extra run battery packs.

With the limited info you gave us, this is the best options I could think of at the moment. All of our UPS units will constantly be charging when the AC power is present, so I am not following the whole "then recharge when it get put away for the day" idea. This solution also depends on the input power at the site, whether you are 120V, 208/240, or 208 3-Phase could change the configuration.

Do you have access to facility's generator fed power?
Instead of trying to run computers on battery for that long, it's better to switch over to battery and only depend on battery while the generator is starting up.
A ten minute runtime would give the generator more than enough time to start.
Set up the UPS to issue shut down to computers after three minutes or so if you pursue this method. This will give the computers the chance to safely shut down if the generator fails to start.
