this is my first ups and i am ready to connect the battery. i have a red cable and a black cable. i am assuming red is positive, black is negative. i can connect the red cable to the pos terminal, but when I do there is no ability to attach the longer black cable to the neg terminal. the black cable was originally connected to the neg terminal so when i first tried to connect the red cable to the pos terminal i got a spark. i am using model bx900r. the guide that comes with the product only shows a black and white drawing for connecting the battery cables and that is actually the original configuration that i tried.

You want to connect the black cable to the negative terminal and the red cable to the positive terminal. Upon doing so you may see a small spark which is normal. At that point you should let the unit charge for a few hours before connecting your equipment.
