Is it safe to put a Back UPS 1500 on a short heavy duty extension cord? ... Only about 10ft"

Kevin,
Do you think this SMART UPS 700 is still serviceable as it seems to do the self-test and go to green . Would it detect problems with the SMART UPS hardware itself and not just battery condition?

When depressing the Test button on a Smart-UPS, it will initiate a self-test. This will cause the UPS to transfer the load to battery for approximately 15 seconds, to verify that the UPS can sustain the load while on battery. It then transfers the load back to online.

I'm almost positive that voids the warranty, but I'd have to double check on Monday. Reason being is that if there is a surge, there's a point of failure (extension cord) that's in between the UPS and the direct AC Source. Also, the cord and wire gauge and distance of the cord is usually the pre-determined distance that the cord can be from the wall while still being able to provide full power to the UPS.

Kevin,
Does the BACK UPS XS 1500 have a built-in fan? Is it enough to handle a MacPro with 4 internal drives and a 23" cinema display?
How much worse are its specs than the SMART UPS 700 that it is replacing as far as voltage stabilization?

Yes the 1500 has a fan.
The Back-UPS and Smart-UPS are quite different. The Back-UPS outputs a step-approximated sine wave while on battery, which the PSU on the Mac may or may not like. I'd consult with them first. The Smart-UPS outputs a pure sine wave on battery and has better AVR.

Kevin,
I got this 1500 because twice my SMART UPS 700 just quit with no warning... it started right back up with no problem. I put in new batteries... but I was thinking that it might not be a battery related problem. I have been running this SMART for 3 years. Could it havwe been related to the old batteries? What should happen with the SMART 700 when the test button is held down for 2 seconds?

It won't be able to determine if there's a problem with the AVR circuit, only the transfer switch from online to on battery and back. If it can sustain a 100W lamp with 3 consecutive self-tests and not drop the load, then it's very possible you might be exceeding the 565W (approx) capacity of the UPS.
