Is SHARE-UPS compatible with SUM3000RMXLI2U?

This question was originally posted by Hyung-Je on APC forums on 3/17/2013

Hi all,

I'm looking for a solution for multiple server shutdown with one Smart UPS.

I have 5 PC running on Windows 7, and want to shutdown them gracefully in case UPS is running on battery mode.

The initial configuration in my mind is:

1x     SHARE-UPS(AP9207)

1x     SUM3000RMXLI2U

5x     Smart Signaling (940-0024)

5x     Serial-to-USB converter

And each signaling connection would be SUM3000RMXLI2U --serial-- SHARE-UPS --serial(940-0024)-- --(serial-to-USB)-- Windows 7 PC.

With some googling, only smart signaling cable(940-0024) will work with serial-to-USB conversion.

The reason why I try the conversion is there are no serial ports on Windows 7 PCs.

Any comment will be appreciated.

HJ

So do those other servers have PowerChute Business Edition rpm on them? PowerChute Business Edition is what will be required for Share UPS. You'd install it in simple signaling mode on each Share UPS client.

And yes, most of the ports (there is one "Advanced port" for Smart Signaling) on the Share UPS will provide simple signaling which provides voltage on certain pins on the DB-9 port to indicate certain conditions one way from UPS->clients. Those conditions are UPS on battery, UPS low battery, and UPS turn off. I think the Share UPS might have some dip switch settings to customize when those signals occur.

I also am not sure on this UPS if you could use the management card and powerchute network shutdown AND an attached share UPS since the management card and the serial port are on the same communications bus. So you should do management card and powerchute OR share ups with powerchute business edition.

Lastly, I am not sure if its an option to execute a command files or a script from the clients that do support powerchute to shutdown the clients that do not (to avoid a share ups) or to use dry contact signaling from the AP9631.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Yes, Share UPS can work with that UPS.

A cheaper, easier solution would be to use the bundled AP9631 network management card included with that UPS model and install PowerChute Network Shutdown on each one of your  Windows 7 computers. As long as these Windows 7 computers are already on the network, you don't need all of those extra serial cables, Share UPS, etc.

So, you'd program the AP9631 with TCP/IP settings, install PowerChute Network Shutdown on your Windows 7 computers, and upon installing it, it will request the IP address of your AP9631 in your UPS. The Windows 7 computers and AP9631 in the UPS will keep constant communication over the network and provide a graceful shutdown option over the network as well. When the UPS is ready to shutdown in the manner you specify, it will signal the PowerChute clients over the network and they will shutdown.

This will also most likely workout a lot cheaper, require less cabling, and then you also have all of the nice features and capability of the pre-installed UPS Network Management Card (AP9631).

Hope that helps.

Hi Angela,

Thanks for the information. Actually, the servers are not all Windows 7 machines. Some are Linux based servers, and PowerChute compatible rpm package already installed on the servers - SM5000/NSM5200 from Pelco by Schneider Electric.

Those Linux servers doesn't allow network shutdown. That's the reason why I've come up with SHARE-UPS.

The other question: some other people are saying SHARE-UPS only replicates simple signal (like dry contact) and retransmit those to the rest of the ports. This means the simple signal would not go through serial-to-USB converter... finally it would not be a complete working solution.

Any comment on this?
