I've purchased a used SU1400NET to protect an iMac G5 running Mac OS X 10.5.6. The UPS came without any cables. Can I somehow connect the UPS DB-9 computer interface port to the Mac USB port? Where can I get the cable required?

As Jordanz said, the Serial to USB cable is not compatible with Smart UPS SU1400NET UPS. APC does offer Power Chute Network Shutdown(PCNS) software which is compatible with Mac OS X Server and Client 10.5.5. The PCNS software does not require a physical communication cable between the UPS and Computer. Click on the below link to download the OS compatibility chart:

However, the Power Chute Network Shutdown software works in conjunction with Network Management Card. The SU1400NET UPS has got a Smart Slot at the rear which can allow you install the Network Management Card. By installing the NMC into the Smart Slot, you can configure an IP address for the card. And then you can download the PCNS software from APC site and install it on your Mac OS X Server and Client 10.5.5 in order to shutdown it gracefully in the event of power failure. You can also monitor the UPS through NMC.
I hope that this helps.

if anything, you are probably looking at a serial to USB adapter but people generally have a lot of problems with those. i cant even guarantee that'd work with a Mac but I'll throw it out there.
maybe someone else can chime in on what they have done..

I wouldn't recommend using a usb converter for the [Smart UPS 1400|http://www.excessups.com/smartups-1400-su1400net-beige-p-40.html]. I heard of computers crashing and systems misbehaving when used through an adapter. The comm cable isn't straight through, that could be the problem.
