How long does it take to charge a new BX1000G?

Bought a BACK-UPS XS 1000VA (BX1000G) for our AV system two days ago. Plugged it in yesterday and the battery level showed ~50% (factory charge). Today it shows ~30% with no error messages!

Power drain indicates ~40 Watts when the AV system is in standby and around 50% (250-300W) when everything is running (almost 100% leeway). As my AV system was off most of the time, shouldn't the battery be at 100% by now? ... or higher than when it was turned on? If tomorrow afternoon it's still @ ~30% or lower, I will return it to Best Buy.

Suggestions?

  • APC is NOT connected to a computer (no external control)
  • AV system is Audio, BD player, PVR and HDTV-LCD (max power is ~300W when all is ON)
  • Battery is properly plugged in (opened cover, flipped and plugged in)
  • AC power is available (120 Vac, no outages)
  • No error/fault indications on the APC BX1000G

PROBLEM IS FIXED smile

I read through the various messages and saw one were you suggested to someone to unplug their UPS from the outlet, let it power the load (~47W) for a minute or two (had no bars but ~4 minutes left per the gauge), then reconnect the UPS to the AC source. Well, I did that and it started charging. This morning, the battery is at full charge.

If this is a conditioning or reset process, perhaps it should be a "sticky note" or in the FAQ?

Well... this morning the battery gauge shows 0 (no bars) and the display indicates less than 6 minutes of backup time. The power flowing through the UPS is 42 Watts as everything was on standby. So either this UPS is bad or I am missing something.

Is there a battery conditioning/learning process???

I don't think you're missing anything. Do you have PowerChute running or are you strictly reading the front LCD panel? If it is on, can you verify what your UPS shows as in the PowerChute?

Might have to have tech support get you a replacement.

No computer connected to the UPS... but I'll plug in my laptop w/PowerChute. I am relying on the front panel LCD. This evening, the battery gauge is at 0 (no bars) and the display says I have a couple of minutes of backup time. All day the power drain was less than 40W (all AV in stand-by mode). Seems like it wasn't being charged. Is there a calibration process?  Pity for a replacement as I just bought it. Perhaps BestBuy will exchange it as I am within their 15-30 day "no questions asked" window.

You should not have to do this though to be honest. I am glad it is fixed but please keep an eye on it. It should not have to be this involved to get your UPS working properly.
