H15 confusion

Hello,

We'd been having power issues at our home for a while now (everyone using their A/C tends to create mini-brown outs along our street). I wanted to do something to protect our A/V equipment since when the power dropped out we'd get units clicking off and on again. Obviously not happy.

I searched around and found the H15. I'd thought about just getting a regular computer UPS (already have two for two computer setups) so I figured why not get one for our A/V setup. I figured I needed to get something specific to A/V rather than just get a beefy UPS for a computer and plug everything in there.

I happened upon the H15 and from what I read it seemed perfect. I bought it and got it all set up and almost immediately it shut off during a power drop. I thought, maybe it's because I just plugged it in...no juice stored anywhere. Then I thought maybe I need to select the Wide voltage range.

That seemed to work until recently. We've noticed a couple of times now, when the power drops as the A/C starts up the unit shuts off. After searching around on the Web, I'm even more confused. I saw a forum post here that says the H15 doesn't have a battery backup.

But the description on the APC site seems to indicate it has a battery backup:

(granted this is for the H15BLK...I got the silver one).

Is there something I missed? I expressly purchased this to avoid this sort of thing. In fact, the situation is worse than it was before from a pure experience standpoint. Before, the stereo would just click off and on again...annoying and probably not great for the component but it was handling it. Now, everything shuts off. Now, I've got to reset the damned clock on the VCR and wait 5 minutes or longer for the DirecTV unit to cycle up again. Power conditioning or not, this is not a good user experience.

I'm almost tempted to just buy a UPS/battery backup and plug the DirecTV into that to avoid this mess. But then I'd be out another $100 or more.

the H15 is a power conditioner only. it does NOT have battery back up on it. it only boosts or trims the incoming voltage which from utility is a pure sinewave. this is called automatic voltage regulation and is done by an internal toroidal transformer on the H15.
