Fan will not stop running.

I have an XS 1300 and it's a few years old now.

I came home last night and noticed that the fan was running on the unit. Then I looked at the front LCD and it said it was running on battery. The power wasn't out so I couldn't figure out why it was running off battery.

Well I woke my computer up from sleep mode and couldn't find anything wrong. I pushed the power button on the unit and it stopped running on battery and switched to the AC.

Then a few hours later, the fan just kicked in and it hasn't shut off ever since! It's been running for the past 12 hours straight now. I turned it off and on and nothing changed. Fan keeps kicking in.

What is wrong?!

From the last update that I received, we are hoping to release the update for PCPE by Q4.

It appears that your UPS might still be within warranty, but if you are considering on getting a UPS with pure sinewave then you could choose either an SMT/SMX UPS. You could TradeUPS your existing UPS and get a new one for a discounted price.

Hi Andrew,

There's a lot of reasons why would a UPS would run on battery. Aside from the power being out, it can also be due to harmonic/frequency distortion, a very high or low voltage etc.

With regards to fan operation, it would actually depend on what kind of UPS do you have. Is it possible for you to provide the exact model number of your UPS? I have included some APC Knowledgebase articles below to help you out.

Can you check if the UPS it hot to touch and if you could open up the battery door I would like you to carefully inspect the battery. If the UPS is hot, it commands the fan to run. Make sure that you have adequate ventilation for the air to flow and cool down the UPS.

If you do have PowerChute Personal Edition installed, see if it gives you any warning message or notification.

No notifications in power chute.

It's been in the same spot for 5 years now and it's never had the fan on for this long. The only time the fan EVER came on was during power failures.

Also have A/C in my house.

I'll try opening the battery case in a bit.

I got the battery cover off and I turned off the unit for a while. I put my fan up to it and blew cold air into it for a while.

It seems to have done the trick!

Ok, so after an hour of not running, it is running again.

It seems it won't stop running unless I keep my window fan blowing on it.

I've had this thing for years and it's probably been 90 or so degrees in my room before and it worked...

It's a cool 76 in here now...

Have you considered replacing the batteries? It could be that the battery is emitting more heat due to it's age.

Ya, I've thought about that. I just got a pop up warning saying my battery is disconnected...

Since my UPS's sinewave doesn't support my new PC's power supply anyways, looks like it's going in the trash. Well that and the current edition of PowerChute is glitchy and requests admin permissions EVERYTIME I load up Windows (apparently this is a known issue that APC just isn't fixing).

Thanks for your help Jon.
