1. When is the fan supposed to turn on? Is it only during a power outage when it's running on battery?
2. Also I noticed there is a slight odor in the room since I installed this UPS. Almost like a new plastic odor. The UPS is also a little warm near the back end but I guess that is normal. I just want to know if the odor will go away after a few days.

Kevin:
I deleted out the RMA number and all those emails you sent me regarding the last 2 units you sent me, but I do have the serial numbers still of
the orginal units I bought at staples, as I took photos of them.
The units are still smelling up, even the garage now where they both are at.
I don't understand why the 1st unit I tried did not make the smell for the first week, and now its as bad as the original 2 i bought at staples.
Let me know what to do? Do you want the serial numbers of both the replacement units you sent me as well as the ones I sent back to you?
thanks
Greg Bakke

Greg,
I apologize for the inconvenience and literal headaches it's giving you. The issue was that the varnish hadn't fully cured as we had hoped it would during transit from the manufacturing plant to the store to your residence.
That has since been resolved.

Hello,
The fan should operate when the UPS is charging the battery or when the UPS is operating on battery to cool down internal components of the UPS. I would continue to monitor the UPS closely regarding the heat being dissipated off of the rear of the UPS. The battery compartment is located there along with the receptacles, but you would want to make sure it does not become excessively hot.

I contacted tech support and they said the warmth is normal at the top. This is because of the transformer inside.
But the odor this unit gives off is just awful. If you sit in the room for a while you get used to it but after leaving and then coming back you can smell this "plastic" smell in the air. Sort of a new car smell but more plastic like. I read on the internet that these units give off a little ozone. Breathing in ozone is not good. I've only had this unit for couple days. Maybe the smell will go away with use. If not I will have to return this back to the store. It gives me a headache.

Hello,
If the odor is nauseating, then I would recommend either returning the UPS for another, or contacting Tech Support for an immediate replacement, as the smell shouldn't have lasted even longer than an hour.

If I contact APC, will they send me a new unit or a refurbished one?
If it is refurbished I'd rather exchange it at the store and get another new one.

Hello,
Because the LCD's are new to distribution, I believe only new unit stock is available for this. If it is still within the 30 day return policy, it's a new unit regardless, but I am about 99% positive it will be a new Unit shipped to you.

Something with a lot of plastic will have the new plastic smell for a while. Give it a few weeks.

Hello,
Unfortunately as KVAR mentioned, that is not normal operation. I've had new units sent to me at APC and pulled them out of the packaging. There should not be a overpowering plastic smell for ANY duration of time. Therefore, please continue as we had discussed before with seeking replacement and consultation from APC Technical Support.

How long have you had it for? This happens with cars, TVs, etc and worse now than a decade back now that plastic is the main structural and cabinet component of consumer electronics and for the first couple of days, it's not uncommon for electronics to fill the room with the plastic smell.
The fresher the unit, the more the plastic smell you'll notice, so while it might not go away as soon as you like, it should eventually go away just like new car smell.

Purchased it just over a week ago. I can return/exchange it to the end of the month. I just don't want to replace it and find out later the new one is doing the same thing. The unit is functioning great but by PC room has that "new plastic" smell.
I found a site with someone also complaining about the smell (last paragraph). Only this is the 1500 unit...

I'm glad I found this thread. I purchased an XS1500LCD from Staples a couple of weeks ago. It smelt like kind of burning plastic smell. This lasted at least a week. I spoke with APC and they told me to return it. I did, and replaced it with 2 brand new XS1500LCD units. I plugged them in and within 8 hours, they both started to fill the room with the same smell. What is this? The boxes were perfectly, unblemished too. I kind of noticed the smell prior to plugging them in. Since they've been plugged in, the smell fills the room. I can even smell it from downstairs!
I spoke with APC tech this morning. He wasn't aware of this but said the LCD units were newer. He said he would really look into it and get back to me. I have 3 other older style XS1500 units from a couple of years ago. Never had any smell issues with those.
The guy said he found other info about smell and said it might have something to do with the battery swelling initially and should go away soon.
Question is, how soon? I don't want to keep returning these things only to have the same issue, over and over again.
I haven't even plugged anything into either of these 2 new units yet - the smell is concerning me.
Someone posted info on amazon.com back in March about a smell.

Hello,
The information about the battery swelling initially, is untrue. The battery will ONLY swell if the charging circuit fails, or environmental conditions are poor, causing the battery to overheat. It will not swell while charging, at all, if all components are fully functional. I have checked with engineering (for those of you who still are monitoring this from earlier posts), and there is a varnish that is used on the PCB for the LCD display. That has some wear-in time added to it after the UPS becomes operational before that odor will dissipate.

The smell is pretty intense.
Are they all gonna smell like this or should I try different ones again.
I'm on my 3rd XS1500LCD already. Is it a bad batch.
Why is it so difficult for someone at APC to actually get a new one and hook it up to confirm.
I guarantee if I delivered this unit to any of my clients, they would call and complain non stop.
I'm really quite concerned about the possible harmful effects of inhaling this smell.
This is starting to 'smell' of a manufacturing defect?
I can't believe there aren't more people commenting on this yet. Or perhaps APC is not admitting it?

I have not been given a tentative time period, but it is that varnish that needs time to essentially be broken in. There is not, I repeat, NOT a manufacturing defect with this and in no way shape or form is APC trying to hide anything. These things are deployed throughout our testing lab, therefore it's already been tested and the odor has dissipated.

So you guys are aware of this, from more than just me?
I just want to confirm that Staples doesn't have a funky batch, and that perhaps I should return them and purchase from somewhere else.
These things are heavy and tough to move around. I would rather not waste time returning these yet again, only to find the next ones have the same smell / break in period.
Please confirm. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello,
That is correct, we know that this odor does occur, and thers is nothing wrong functionally with the unit. Again, the issue points to the varnish that is used and will just need some time to wear off.

Hello:
I just bought 2 brand new BR1300LCD UPS units from staples yesterday, I plugged them in for the 16 hour intial charge up, and when i woke up the this morning, i smelled a strong odor in my house, smelled like battery acid odor. I can't seem to get rid of the odor?
I have read the thread hear from a previous customer complaining about the odor. It gave me a headache just smelling that odor.
Over the last 12 years, I've owned 12 different APC UPS units, and never experienced this problem with any of those units.
What do you suggest I do, keep breathing in this horrific odor? I can't wait a few weeks for that smell to go away, and I can't imagine anyone else waiting around for a while for it to go away.
If it doesn't go away soon, I'm going to return both of them to Staples and get a refund.
thanks for any advice.

Greg,
Have you actually taken the battery out of the chassis to check for any type of leakage, etc.?
The smell other customers were referring to smells, well, pretty much like Old School Magic Markers. It has a curing smell on some products from the varnish, and if left unvented, can definitely cause a headache. The smell shouldn't wait 2 weeks, it should honestly be gone in a day or so.
But if it's a sulfur smell, then that's the battery - a completely unrelated issue.

hi:
thanks for replying back. As a precaution to avoid this odor smell issue, i have the units out in my garage, the best ventalation possible.
It has been 2 days now since I bought the units, and still the garage as that certain odor to it, not as strong, because its in a vented area, but its still
noticable.
Also have another question, I see these 1300 units draw 13amps per unit, can it be safe for me to plug both new units into a 20amp breaker circuit?
Do they draw 13amp continuously? Should each UPS be on a separate breaker circuit? I know in the past I've run several UPS untis before on 1 breaker, and
never had a problem tripping breakers. But thought i'd ask for a safety concern.
It says in the manual to make sure the unit is on a 20 amp circuit.
I guess basically I'm asking how many UPS units can you plug into a 20 circuit that draw 13amps? Probably one.
thanks for info.
If the smell is still in my garage after tomorrow, I may consdier returning the units, but I'll check for battery leakage and get back to you.

Hi again:
I checked the battery conditions on both units, they are dry and no leaking. When i pulled the batteries out, the smell was much worse.
The varnish used in these units is a bad idea, why is apc doing this? That smell is horrible.
Yes it does smell like a black marker odor.
All the other APC units i own have a metal case around them, mostly BACK UPS PROs and Smart UPS units, is the metal case models not have the
varnish on them, is that why they never gave off a smell like these new ones I bought? these are the first apc units I've ever bought that came in a plastic case.
I guess i will have to return them and buy the more expensive metal case units, but I like the LCD panel readout idea. Its too bad APC doesn't
make a metal case unit with the LCD panel readout on the units. Whats really to bad, is that these units I bought won't just quit smelling.
I can't have these units in my server room, if its going to give me and my clients headaches all day.
thanks for information

Hello again:
thanks for your reponses, i appreciate this.
I noticed that both units I bought, on the long slip that shows the various testing done to these 2 new units, that they were both tested in 2007.
One was November of 2007, and the other was in December of 2007. These units have probably been sitting on the store shelf for close to 6 months or in some warehouse.
Well, anyway - should I return them both to staples and have them re-order me new ones? Will the new ones not have this odor as you have said
has been resolved?
I'll print out this forum thread and show it to the manager at Staples, so he knows what is going on here.
Yeah, i had just installed a new sun server for some html websites I'm doing, and now will have to power them down and install an older APC unit.
The reason I bought these units, is mainly because of the LCD panel feature, which I think is a great idea. Also these units are much lighter
than any of the SMART ups units I've purchased in the past, and the cost is lower as well.
I guess the only thing I can do, is return them and have them order me in two new ones, hopefully they will not smell next time.
thanks for your information, I was wondering if you could give me some ideas on the AMP draw on these units, which I had asked you about before.
If the new units I get to replace these 2 I bought don't smell, I will be buying more of these LCD models, as I have a great need for several more UPS units.
How many UPS units such as the 1300 or 1500LCD models can I run on 1 20 amp circuit, Would you only recommend 2 units per circuit, or maybe 1 per circuit.
thanks much

Greg,
Not sure if you've seen my other posts around these boards (there's only around 650 of 'em sitting around), but I tend to make sure I take care of our (APC's) customers myself. If you want to wait until Monday, I will send you an email and process an RMA for BOTH UPS's with overnight shipping and return labels for both. I will ensure you that they both will be from the 2008 Litter and not have this problem.
Also, since @ 1300VA you can only really max out @ I think 9.xA per UPS, you can use 2 per circuit, I would say safely, so long as they are not above...75% capacity. Or if you install a 20A circuit you can use two without a problem.
Let me know what you want to do. I'll be monitoring the boards all weekend, but not have access to my mail until Monday after 12pm EST.
I could also probably send you an email from my APC Test account via YahooMail if you are going to be busy Monday. I can send that email Sunday.

Hi, thanks again:
I really appreciate your service and attention to my matter, yes I realize that you probably have tons of other posts on the web. I work myself in the broadcast
technical division of internet services, and do understand about posts on forums. I didn't actaully expect such a quick response to my posts, but its very appreciated.
I just returned from the staples store and showed the printout of these posts to them, they didn't seem very interested in reading any of the posts, they just kept telling me in a rude way, "just bring them back, "just bring them back" - my reasoning behind trying to show them the posts is that I wanted to make sure
they get me a 2008 batch of these units, and not some more 2007 models sitting in one of their warehouses.
They kinda pushed me out the door, and didn't want to hear my complaining that much.
Well, now getting your reponses, I'd much rather have you send me those shipping labels and I will send the units to you (apc) and get fresh units from you.
So I'll wait till monday.
I just walked into my office here, and saw your response, and also noticed the ordor has not gone away in my garage, where both units are running off a 20amp garage outlet.
So i've unplugged them, disconnected the red terminal on both units batteries, and shut them off.
I'll go the route of having you get me new ones
I'll wait for your email on what to do next.

Hi,
I just purchased a XS1500LCD from CircuitCity that also has this problem.I thought at first it was overheating until i found this thread. This ups is powering a server in a enclosed room and the smell is just terrible. If possible i would also like to rma this for an updated model without this problem or i will just return this for a refund as it appears after a trip back to CircuitCity that the ones they have in the store were all made in 2007 same as this one.
Any help appreciated
Thanks

Randy,
For starters, I would recommend doing some research on the difference between Back-UPS and Smart-UPS in relation to back-up power for your Server. Ideally, you do not want a Back-UPS running as your UPS of choice for a Server. That being said, I would recommend returning the UPS to Circuit City, and looking into getting a Smart-UPS (Not SC, an SUA or something equivalent) for power for your Server.
I'm hesitant to replace the UPS on our end because if you have a problem down the line with the compatibility of the UPS, the step-approximated sine wave while on battery, and the power supply of your server, then it turns into a "We told you so" situation which will only create frustration and downtime on your end.

Kevin:
Greg from Minot, you had sent me 2 replacement units, and I've very patiently attempted to wait for the odor to die away.
The first unit i tried did go away, but now it returned on that unit, and the other unit has got much worse.
I've had the units now for almost 3 weeks, but cannot seem to rid the odor out of the units.
could it be because they were not 2008 units? I thought i could wait this out, but i guess not.
Let me know what you think.
I have had to resort to putting both units out in my garage, because my house is starting to smell again.

Greg,
I was hoping that this would be avoided, but in the back of my mind I was still extremely skeptical. Product engineering has given me contacts at all of our distribution centers to ensure that these people physically pick the RMA from the 2008 stock. Can you email me back with the original RMA number and the serial numbers of those two units? I can then setup the RMA for 2-day shipping ,setup the tags and also contact the people in the distribution center.

Well the curing agent wasn't used on the BX900R, only the LCD models, so it's probably completeley unrelated. If you post the first 8 of the serial, I can tell you when it was manufactured. Chances are it's been on the shelf for at least 3 months if not longer.

The first 8 of serial number are JB072801. Any help you can provide to help eliminate the smell would be appreciated.

That would definitely have been manufactured either the first or second week of 2007. You can return the UPS, you can call into tech support and get a new one if you want.
Have you inspected the battery chassis and terminals to make sure there's nothing wrong there?
Can you describe the smell?
Thanks.

I purchased a APC BX900R June 16 08 from Circuit City and I still have a simular smell after over two weeks, in the computer room in my home all the time. Even when I run the ceiling fan I still smell this ordor. According to the PowerChute Technical Data the battery was last replaced 7/13/07. Does this mean this unit was manuf. July 07? Also the tech. data only shows the remaining battery capacity at 91% after charging the unit for several weeks. My avg. consumption is 250 watts. What can you suggest to get rid of this smell!

It smells like acid. It was really strong the first week but is still strong when you leave the room all day. I have checked the battery and there don't appear to be an leaking. The smell gets stronger after shuting down the computer and turning off the ceiling fan for several hours and then going back into the computer room. I have my computer in a bedroom that is 13'X15' with 8' ceilings. Even leaving the door open the smell gets strong after over night 8-10 hours. When I come home in the evening I can smell this as I go down the hall before I even get to the room.

Does it smell like rotten eggs / sulfuric acid?
Or does it smell more like an old Magic Marker, like these kind:

No, it does not smell like rotten eggs, but the smell burns a little when you breath it in through your nose like sulfuric acid. It has that slight sting in you nose. I have been in the room now for several hours and I have gotten use to it but can still tell it is there, but harder to describe now. I'll send you a more detail reply tomorrow after I have a chance to pay attention more to the smell when I have been out of the room for several hours.

At this point, I wouldn't even hesitate to work iwth this much longer. Take it out of commission, disconnect the battery.
Get a call into Tech Support which in the states is open until 8PM EST, and get that thing replaced.
If there's a problem, point them to this thread.

I have an XS 1500 with LCD and I haven't noticed anything unusual except sub-par battery performance.

I had the same problem with a RS1500LCD. The odor was so bad (for over a week), I finally just returned the unit to the store and got a refund. I had contacted tech support, but they were no help...all the Indian-based techie could do was walk-through a flowchart of unhooking the battery, rehooking it up, etc. Amazing bad support from the last time I had to call several years ago.
The other big reason for the return was that there was a roughly 7000 Hz "swinging" squeal every 8 seconds or so once the battery was fully charged that drove me a bit nuts. I was able to record this. I tried to attach the MP3 to this message, or you can listen to the MP3 file here: [http://www.box.net/shared/kvfjcc9xbv]
Weird.

Hi,
Thanks for that information. Did you happen to record the serial number from that UPS? The squeal alone should've been enough to warrant an RMA replacement or exchange through whom you purchased the UPS.
