Powerchute is alerting that "The backup batter has become disconnected. The unit will not be able to support your system in the event of a power problem until you connect your battery. See owner's manual for details."
On the front of the UPS LCD, it dispplayes Event 203.
In Windows 7 Event Viewer, it is logging Event ID 61460, which reads:
Log Name: Application
Source: APC UPS Service
Date: 6/19/2010 12:46:09 PM
Event ID: 61460
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: SYSTEM
Computer: HpDesktop
Description: Battery disconnected in the battery backup.
These alerts are occurring approximately every 30 to 45 seconds.
Here are the details about my BackUPS:
Model: Back-UPS XS 1300 LCD
Serial number: JB0717019654
Firmware revision: 836.H5.D
Software version: PowerChute Personal Edition 2.2
Date of last manual self-test: 5/16/2010
Result of last manual self-test: Passed
RAM: 8 GB
Free disk space: 826,260 MB
When I try to initiate the self-test, it will not complete.
Any suggestions?? Thanks!
Mark

when did this start happening? did anything change recently?
Event 203 on the front of the LCD screen indicates 203 events have happened to cause the UPS to transfer to battery or intervene in some manner - it is not an event code.
lets start with checking the physicals - ensure that the data cable between the computer and UPS are secure. there should be an RJ-45 connection plugged into a port on the back of the UPS itself labeled "data port" and on the other end, a USB connection that should be plugged into your computer. verified it did not come loose or is plugged into the wrong port some place.
next - i guess, go to control panel on your computer and go to Device Manager - see if you see an APC UPS or uninterruptible power supply listed somewhere. if its in there, we can proceed to a different route.
if you don't get anywhere with these steps, i would try and do a reboot on everything if you havent. disconnect and turn off all critical load to the UPS, like the computer. ensure that data cable is attached in the meantime. then, lets do a braindead on the UPS to reboot it. turn it off, unplug it from the AC power outlet then disconnect the battery and hold the power button on it for 5-10 seconds to discharge the capacitors. after waiting, reconnect the battery securely and then go ahead and hook everything back up - plug UPS back into the outlet, turn it on, let it do its self test, plug your computer back in with data cable securely attached as mentioned prior, turn the computer back on and lets see what we get.
hope that helps us get started! if you arent sure on something, let us know prior and we can clarify.

I followed your recommendations, rebooted everything, checked all connections, removed the battery for 10 seconds, etc. The LCD event counter is at 0 now and the battery icon is empty and flashing. In Powerchute, the battery has 50 minutes of remaining time. Event Viewer is still capturing the same event error. The device shows up in Device Manager under Battery. Any other ideas? Thanks again!

Hi Mark,
By any chance, do you have another UPS of the same model? The display that you are seeing on your UPS and the event that you are encountering means that the UPS fails to detect the battery. If there is a battery inside the unit it could be disconnected or either the battery is faulty or the battery charging mechanism of the UPS is at fault. The normal lifespan of our battery is 3~5 years depending on the condition on how it was used while your UPS has 3 years warranty.
If you feel that you are still within the warranty period, feel free to call our APC Support Hotline at 800.800.4272

Here's what I got from APC Support:
"As per the symptoms, I am sorry to say that the UPS is having some internal fault in it. As per the Serial Number of the UPS\, it is out of warranty. Thus I apologize but APC will not be able to provide you with a replacement."
I bought the unit in 8/2007, so it is out of the 2 year warranty.
Time to shop for a new UPS system. Maybe I'll try CyberPower this time, as their warranty is 3 years....
Thanks!

Mark, I don't know if you still have this unit, but I just bought mine, and was having a similar issue, I know this sounds like a completely ridiculous idea, but I firmly rapped mine on the side and it popped right on, and has worked ever since.
