After owning this EX7 for about 5 years (and replacing the batteries once) I am finally trying to get the management software to work and I'm having trouble. All the RS232 stuff seems OK: I've checked the DTE/DCE ends are "mating" properly (electrically speaking) but there does not seem to be any data flowing over the wires. How can I troubleshoot this thing? The Solution-Pac software simply tells me that it is failing to get a response out of the UPS having claimed it sent a Z command (I think). Can I, for example, use tip to connect directly to the serial port and type some string that ought to provoke a response? Is there some magic to the DB9 serial cable that comes with the UPS? Does it require any RS232 signals other than data?
Information is thin on the ground and I'm running out of ideas. All non-inflammable suggestions are welcomed.

Hi Seagoon,
What is the model number of the UPS? May I know what exactly you are trying to accomplish?

It is an MGE Pulsar EX7: is there a more precise model number somewhere that I need to find?
All I am trying to do is to get the Solution-Pac software, running on a Sparc Solaris 10 platform, to work to the extent that it will tell me if there is a problem with the EX7. That's it. Nothing very sophisticated. I just want some warning, in the event of a power outage, that the battery is about to go dead.
Many thanks for your willingness to help.

Hi Ned,
Sorry for a very delayed response. After few researches, it was found out that MGE Pulsar is already owned by Eaton. You might want to call their tech support hot line to get the software.
Thank you for using APC Discussion Forum.
