ES 350 - PC shuts off in power outage

This is a fairly new unit, less than a year and every time the power blinks my 6 year old Sony Vaio shuts down.. I did a test and hooked up 200 watts of lights and pulled the power and I noticed that the lights blinked when it switched from line power to battery... The unit works with 200 watts attached... Appearently this blink is enough to shut my computer down. So is this normal? I would have figured it would have been seamless.... or is my Vaio sensative.. going to try it on my wifes HP. thanks in advance.

1) The ES 350 can supply 350VA and 200W. Today's iMac has a maximum power consumption of 241W which is more than the ES 350 can supply, even before adding the NAS. I would take a look at the power requirements of each device attached to the UPS (usually labeled near the power cord).
2) You ask: why does the ES 350 switch to battery when other devices in the house are operating okay? (implication: Shouldn't the UPS only switch to battery when there's a power problem that would turn off my other devices?) The UPS has to be more sensitive to power disturbances than the devices attached to it, because it has to react to them and go on battery before attached devices are affected. If the UPS waited until the power disturbance affects your computer and NAS, then it would already be too late to save them.

Hi Warren,

Is this the first time that you've encountered this problem? Once the Sony PC shutsdown, can you still turn it back while the UPS is on battery? Do you have any other PC that can be tested on this unit?

Thanks for the response, Jon... I have noticed that it has probably been doing it for a few months since when I come home from work I noticed it had rebooted... So it has rebooted itself in the past.. But last night I was setting there when it happened. and it didn't restart. I actually had to pull the plug on the Vaio and replug it in to get it to boot. Tonight I'm going to try it on my wife's HP and see what happens...

This could be related to the transfer time that the UPS was designed for. The transfer time is the time it takes for the UPS to switch state from Online to OnBattery and vice-versa. Ok Put it on my wife's HP and monitor and it works just fine. Guess she just inherated a new UPS? lol Maybe my Vaio's power supply is getting weak and can't take a 2 to 8 ms delay? I might have a spare power supply that I could swap out and try... Thanks again Jon!

For the ES 350 the transfer time is around 8~10ms. If you can't find a power supply that would work with your Vaio I suggest that you contact them to know more about the requirements of your power supply in terms of transfer time, the mininum and maximum VA and Wattage rating as well as if it can accept a step approximated sinewave. Our BackUPS produce a step approximated waveform. If their power supply needs a pure sinewave, you might need to consider moving to Smart-UPS product line.
