Display shows 0 min on BR900GI even after replacing the battery and resetting the UPS

I have two APC Backup UPS model BR900GI, one in each of my offices. One is working perfectly and the display shows 56 min, which I take to mean that it will power the server attached to it for 57 min in the case of a power failure.

The UPS unit in the other office recently failed. What happened was that the power went off and the UPS instantly died as well, taking the server down with it.

Once power was restored we tested the UPS again by manually turning the power off, and it did the same thing, even though it showed the battery as being fully charged. Also, the faulty battery icon was not lit, but it did show "0 min". We took this to mean the battery was faulty, so replaced the battery.

Now, the situation is that when we manually test it by switching off the power the UPS supplies power to the server. Yay! All good. Except that the timer still shows "0 min" even though the battery indicator is showing the battery as fully charged, and it passed the manual power off test.

So I powered down the server, I reset the UPS by unplugging everything from the UPS, unplugged it from the power, removed the internal battery from the UPS, held down the power button for more than 5sec, reinstalled the internal battery and plugged everything back in and turned it back on. The UPS initially showed 34min, which made me hopeful, but this quickly drifted down to 1min where it has stayed ever since. It still works as a UPS. The only problerm seems to be that it isn't displaying the time properly.

Can this be fixed?

John

John,

If the unit is under warranty you should contact local support for assistance.

I would have suggested resetting the unit but you have already done that so if the battery sustains the load when the UPS switches to battery output and the unit is out of warranty I suggest ignoring the issue. I do suggest running a self-test weekly to verify the battery will sustain the load since it is reporting the wrong up-time.
