Converting APC Smart UPS --> Online UPS

Converting Smart UPS into Online UPS (Double Conversion)
Sharing Battery with multiple UPS????

Last night i combined/shared my same batteries among TWO APC Smart UPS of same model (APC Smart-UPS 2700W / 3000VA )
Left one UPS plugged into the socket and the second one was plugged from the socket. The inverter of second UPS continuous run....
My load on 2nd UPS is less than 1000W ( Out Load is two Computers with 21" LCDs and two medical devices)

*Why i did this??*
We have very much problem of power failure in our area i.e about 8hour / day .....so i have to use generator for this propose. But same time is don't need any power interruptions and also need sure sine wave.
So my 1st UPS is getting Power from main supply or Generator .

*Have anybody experience of this?*
*Any problem with mentioned layout?*
*Can it damage it anything... i mean itself (UPS) or Battery or equipment connected to it?*

I am using Car's Wet Battery with my UPS
UPS Model :APC Smart-UPS 2700W / 3000VA (SUA3000RMI2U) 220V

Well APC can't speak for this as this of course not how we intend our UPS' used. If anyone does have any experience with this though, feel free to reply.

Hi Attique,

Every model of UPS that APC produces has an inverter designed specifically for the demands of the UPS. The SmartUPS Line-interactive and Online UPS inverters are almost certainly different designs. For instance, the inverters in UPSes without extended run battery packs (SUA and SMT models) aren't expected to operate beyond a fixed duration, and therefore have thermal design limitations. Extended Run UPSes such as the SMX series have inverters that run longer, but there's no guarantee they would work in an online configuration. Is there a reason you don't want an actual APC Online UPS?

Hi Voidstar,

The reason is very simple …..I just want to use my existing UPS (APC Smart-UPS) & buying new online ups will cost me a lot….and my current UPS will be dumped.

More my load requirement is like below

0. 5~1 kW -- Only Online UPS is acceptable
0.5 kW -- Line Interactive UPS is acceptable
1 kW -- just need power

Power Failure/shut down for Electricity Main Supply is minimum 6 hour and sometimes go to 14 hours. In routine power shut down is split into two hours duration at different fixed timing …. But once a week it is continious
So using only UPS is not suitable+. I tried to use different UPS’s step-up for last two year but my batteries life became every short because they were being recharged about 3~4 times daily ….ultimately its number of life cycle were completed very earlier….I have to shift to generator option.

h2. Now I just want to use what I have and get best out of it

Makes sense. I don't know if your plan to make an online UPS from two line-interactive ones will work. The battery charger on the first UPS might not even be powerful enough to drive the second UPS.

Is there any possibility that your loads where "only online UPS is acceptable" would work on a line-interactive UPS? What do you gain from using an online UPS for those loads?

A generator is the preferred approach if you want longer stay-on times. Alternatively, you could have the computers and the UPSes shut down immediately and conserve battery.

One thing to note on generators: not all produce clean power, and so the UPS may remain on battery while the generator is running. To avoid this, you may want to test the generator under load with the UPS before purchasing. The UPS has a sensitivity setting which can be set to "low" to be less sensitive to the generator. If changing the sensitivity doesn't work, then the only other option I know of is an Online UPS which, by its nature, is less sensitive to generators.
