I have a Brother 1450 laser printer plugged into the surge protection only side of my ES 450. When I start the laser printer the UPS makes a "click" and then a "pop" sound. This happens only when the printer has not been used for awhile.
Is it overloading the UPS? It isn't plugged into the battery side of the UPS.
Thanks!
Ron

How often does this happen? If your UPS is going to battery many times a day, you're putting wear on the battery and it will fail prematurely.

When the laser printer has not been used in a while, the fuser element must first heat up, similar to a toaster oven, before it can print.
Your UPS is likely responding to a sag in the voltage on that circuit when your printer is warming up. The voltage reaching the UPS is dropping to a point where the UPS operates on battery for a short period of time until the voltage returns to normal levels.

The fuser in laser printer is often switched by an electronic switch device that causes a very sudden change in voltage across the line. The voltage might not dip that low, but the high rate of descent causes the UPS to interpret it as power failure is approaching and switch over to battery. If the UPS doesn't allow you to tweak the sensitivity, there's really no way around to it, other than putting the printer on a different circuit.

Well, as long as it isn't hurting the UPS, a "click" and "pop" a couple times a day doesn't bother me. Shows me the UPS is working, too.
Thanks!
