Looks like I have an issue with another CS500 unit. I replaced the battery, turned it on with nothing connected and it went into overload. I confirmed the contacts were connected properly and retested with the same result.
This unit looks like its been dropped at some point. It has a crack in the plastic on the front face.
Hmm... thought I would try another battery and now it seems OK. Will charge over the weekend and do some testing Monday.

I've actually seen this overload problem happen many times on the CS series. Not only the on CS500 but a lot on the CS1000 and RS1500. I think it's just a coincidence that it happened to you when the battery was replaced. We run about 40 of these units and we have that happen pretty frequently. I am pretty sure you'd have to be crazy to send one of these units out for repair, the cost of the repair will by far outweigh the cost of buying a new or a used one. I'd keep the batteries and throw out the unit. I don't think the CS units are anywhere as reliable as the Smart UPSs.

This is an abnormal operation of the UPS. The Overload LED should not be lit with nothing load attached. I do not think that the bad battery is the root cause of the issue. You may need to consider returning the purchased new battery to reseller for refund, and replace or repair the unit in question. If you would like to consider having this UPS repaired, you would need to contact an APC Authorized Repair Center for service costs. The company name is CBM and their telephone number is 888-2FIX-UPS (888-234-9877).
We also offer a discount on brand new units with a brand new two-year or three year warranty when you trade in your old unit. Click here to know more about the APC Trade UPS program.
Have a nice day!

OK, thanks. It may just have been random luck that the unit failed with one new battery and not the other. The new battery it failed with is in another unit now and working normally. I just verified that it holds a charge and gives us reasonable offline time.
I will keep the suspect unit out of circulation and replace it.
