Brand new BR1500LCD powering off when mains power recovered

Hi guys,

I have a new BR1500LCD that is behaving almost perfectly, except for this one issue. I configured my computer to shut down when the battery drops below 70% (as a test), and then pulled the plug. Unplugged it, everything works fine, the computer eventually shuts down, and the UPS continues humming along on battery power.

When I plug it back in, the UPS takes almost 10 seconds to notice the power is back, then the icon switches from BATTERY to MAINS. Another second or so later, the UPS shuts off entirely. I have to press the power button to turn it back on, and boot my computer back up.

I need the UPS to come back ON when the power is available. Is this normal behavior? Is it configurable? Thoughts?

As far as load, the UPS is capable of 865 watts, and the devices plugged into it consume a peak of 450 watts (260 watts when everything's idle) according to the load display on the unit. I don't believe it's an overload issue.

machrider, I'd attempt to test the UPS without the USB data cable attached. That way you can eliminate software running on your computer as the cause.

Are you using the PowerChute software? From what you described it seems that the setup was off of Native Support since you configured it for 70%.

Have you tested PowerChute to see if it acts differently doing the shutdown/return process (even though since you're not using it, you probably have a good reason not to)?

It's definitely not an overload issue since you would hear a loud constant tone.

No, I'm using apcupsd, on a Linux PC, connected using the USB data cable.

I sorta don't think it's a software issue, would the software actually tell the UPS to shut itself off after power comes back online? After the PC shuts down, the UPS is on battery acting completely normal, and it's only when I plug the main power cable back in that the UPS shuts itself off completely. This tells me that in a real power outage situation, when the power is recovered, my UPS won't be on and therefore my computer isn't going to restart. 😞

It comes down to this I guess:

1. Back-UPS are only supported by Windows OS's and a few particular Mac's.

2. How UPSD is running on Linux and shutting down gracefully, is beyond me.

If you're using a Linux-Based OS, maybe PCBE is the software for you. Unfortunately, that's only going to work with a Smart-UPS.

As to why the UPS shuts off when mains is returned...no clue. It should stay in a low-voltage sleep mode until input power returns unless the battery becomes exhausted.
