I have a APC Back-Ups Pro 650s. It uses a 12v 12ah battery which needs replacing.
Since this backup unit is connected to a single 5 year old computer, is there any reason that I have to replace the battery with the same amperes?
Couldn't I replace it with a 12v 7.5ah battery instead? I realize this replacement battery doesn't have the same amp power, but I don't really need it and the replacement cost for a 7.5ah battery is much less than a 12ah battery.
Would there be any adverse issues with the Back-Ups Pro or the smaller battery if I installed a 12v 7.5ah battery instead of the 12v 12ah battery?
BD
PS I also realize that the 7.5ah battery is not as wide as the 12ah battery and the connections are not exactly the same size...none which are a problem.

hi,
from an APC standpoint, we cant recommend doing this. the UPS has a certain charger power and is designed to charge the 12aH batteries. you may run into problems trying to charge the smaller amp hour batteries or you may not but regardless, the UPS is designed to have a 12aH battery.
perhaps others can chime in with their experiences.

Thanks for the info.
As a test, I put a 12v 7.5ah battery in the unit and re-connected it to the computer and monitor. At first the yellow charging light came on and then shortly afterward, went out. The green power light remained on. I then pulled the electrical plug from the unit to simulate a power failure. The computer and monitor continued working with the unit beeping to let me know of the power outage. It ran the computer and monitor for more than a minute before I decided to reconnect the power. There didn't appear to be any problem. I also checked to see if the battery was hot, after being in the unit for over an hour and it was not warm at all.
So, unless there is long term damage being done to the battery or the unit (that I wouldn't be aware of in this short test ) it appears to be working just fine.
I would be interested in anyone else who has done the same to see if they have had any long term issues.
