I have some ES 550 and ES 750 home. (as well as a APC pro 1500).
But for now my ES need new batteries.
The RBC17 is the battery that APC says you should put in the 750 and the RBC110 is the one for the 550. The confusing part is that the dimensions for the battery for the 750 are smaller by a tiny bit then the battery for the 550.
So could I put a 750 style battery in a 550 and would it last longer? I know it can't give more amps but would it stay ON longer?
It also looks like on AMAZON many people are selling the same battery for replacement of both units.
What is the story?

The brief answer is yes it will work, and in theory yes it will provide a longer run time (very marginally at full load).
From what I can find the RBC17 is a CSB HR1324 & the RBC110 is a CSB GP1272. These are actually pretty high quality batteries.
To be honest, most of the generic replacement batteries out there are the standard cheap 7.2/9AH batteries and they all "work" to a certain degree. If you are not loading the UPS anywhere near its maximum capacity then yeah, use what you can find. If you plan on pushing it anywhere close to its ratings then you will likely get better performance and a longer battery life using the originally specified batteries.
The HR batteries have a lower internal resistance and are designed specifically for high current UPS style drain. The UPS capacity and life estimation will be calibrated to work with this particular battery, and using a generic (sub-standard) replacement *will* impact the functionality of the unit. Will it be enough for you to notice? Probably not.
Of course if you are talking about using actual CSB replacement batteries then yeah, put the HR1324 in the 550 and it'll do a great job. They just cost a bit more.
I toyed with generic replacement batteries for a few years (I had several sources of cheap SLAs). They all "worked", but most of them were dead in just over a year. UPS style discharge just beats them to death, whereas I've jump started a car on a genuine GP1272.
If you are going to buy generic batteries for your UPS, look for a store that specialises in UPS batteries and stands by their product. Most of them will be selling Yuasa, CSB or Vision.
