Backup UPS is now garbage
After trying two brand new batteries, one from APC and the other from Apex, I've concluded that my ES-500 has given up the ghost. Even after installing the new Apex, it says Estimated Run Time of 2 minutes.
So I picked up a new ES-750 and everything is working the way it's supposed to again.
I didn't expect that I would have to replace my unit only after 3.5 years. Just letting you guys know what you're in for.

did you try unplugging the UPS from the wall to see how long it actually lasts? powerchute is just an estimate and the UPS, having a brand new battery, may need a mini calibration so that powerchute realizes that the UPS provides more than 2 minutes runtime.
