Hello;
I am using a Back ups XS 800 connected by the APC RJ45 - USB cable to a Windows Server 2003. The Server does not detect or recognize the UPS in Device Manager and the Power Applet. I know the USB ports are active because the machine detects and recognizes other USB devices.
I have not installed Powerchute software because I want to use the Windows Power Applet to shutdown the Server in a power failure after the battery runs down.
Does anyone know why the UPS is not recognized by Windows Server 2003?
Thanks!
Bill

Hi Bill,
Did you check any of those things out on the article that I posted? I have never seen the cable be the problem in this situation either.
I would suggest power cycling the UPS and trying it again, if not, I think the best idea if possible, would be to see if the same thing happens on another machine. At least we'd be able to confirm its most likely something with the UPS rather than the configuration on the server. I am leaning towards the UPS but we'd want to make sure the appropriate drivers are present on the system that are noted in the article. Also make sure this is a USB port right on server, rather than on a hub. I am not so sure a server would have a USB hub anyway but maybe..
Let me know if you're able to try it on a different machine, perhaps a Windows XP machine. If it does the same thing, it might be the data port on the UPS but I'd like to see what happens on the other machine first before saying thats definitely the problem.

So NOTHING is coming up, not even that it detected an unknown device connected?
Do you have another PC to test it out on just so we can confirm the problem is with the UPS? You might try rebooting the UPS as well but you'd need to power down your load first of course.
You can also reference this article for some additional ideas that maybe will lead us to a conclusion. [Click here to view article|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1645]
Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply;
Yes, the PC does show "Unknown Device" in Device Manager and when I unplug the UPS USB cable from the PC the Unknown Device in Device Manager goes away. I know the USB port on the PC is working because it detects a USB flash drive.
I also used another APC USB cable and I get the same problem so I don't think it is the cable.
I thought about power cycling the UPS (I assume that is what you mean by reboot) for I haven't done that yet.
Any other thoughts would be very helpful.
Thanks very much!
Bill
