Back-UPS battery died, but Powerchute didn't warn me

I have a Back-UPS ES BE650R and my desktop is running Windows 7 Home Premium with PowerChute Personal Edition 2.2. Yesterday, I turned on my desktop pc and the UPS emitted a constant tone with the power light flashing red and green. I realize that this indicates a dying battery, but I'm wondering why PowerChute didn't give me any warning before. In fact, checking it now and it shows that everything is fine. Is this a matter of incompatibility with Windows 7? Can I install the latest version and would it still work with my old UPS?

Anyway, I disconnected everything from the battery-backup side of the UPS and hope that it'll recharge itself for a couple days.

Appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks.

Oh, here's what I have connected:
Desktop mid-tower with 450W power supply
22" widescreen LCD monitor
powered 4.1 speakers (surge protector side only)
DSL modem
Wireless router (802.11g)
cordless phone (surge protector side only)
Canon Pixma inkjet printer (surge protector side only)
external Seagate Freeagent hard drive

Thanks. I didn't realize that clearing the alarm before turning on my pc would prevent PCPE from recognizing the problem. Interesting. Do you know if the most recent version of PCPE would work with my old UPS and Windows 7?

Funny, I tried using the UPS Selector on APC's site and it keeps giving me the same way overpriced suggestions! Something's buggy.

EDIT: I just turned on the UPS while my PC is on (nothing plugged into the battery-backup side) and the alarm immediately went off. PCPE popped up a notice that my battery is disconnected. However, when I check the Current Status, it says that the battery is 100% charged. Go figure.
