I just recently had two BX900R fail with the Screech of Death, I replaced the batteries, the units would operate for perhaps 30 minutes on the bench with NO LOAD, then the UPS would shut down, light the OVERLOAD indicator and screech. I called APC tech service and was told that I'd damaged the units by replacing the batteries with non-APC batteries.
WTF?
I've been maintaining a fleet of UPS at my company for over 12 years, I've probably replaced over 100 12V/7AH sealed lead acid batteries in that time frame, and never had any issues like this. I even built a fixture to load the batteries on a 3A resistive load and log their loaded voltage decay curves, so I can identify batteries that are getting weak and pull them from mission-critical applications. I'm a degreed EE with over 30 years experience designing and building systems for real world test environments.
Then I found this thread about the fan failures, popped the cases open, and sure enough, both my BX900R's have bad fans.
Here's what happens now APC: I don't buy another one of your products - you are expunged from our approved supplier list.
Respectfully,

Woke up this morning to a constant whining sound from one of my 3 Back-UPS XS 900 BX900R units. Unit has been working without issue for over 12 months. Red light indicating "Overload". Unplugged EVERYTHING (Laptop, WII, and DVR). Still whining. Unplugged unit, shut it down, waited an hour. Plugged back in with nothing connected, and it started whining again about 10 minutes later. Shutdown, unplugged, and disconnected the battery. Waited 30 minutes. Reconnected the battery. Plugged back into wall outlet. Whining within 30 minutes. Ser# JB0634010483.
Any suggestions?

Bruce,
The symptom what you described leads me to believe that there is an internal fault with the UPS circuitry. Please call in the APC Customer Care Center at 1-800-800-4272 or [Live Chat/E-support|http://www.apc.com/support/index.cfm] to get the replacement unit under factory warranty if this unit was purchased within last three years.

I too have begun to have this same problem. Working on my computer yesterday, for no apparent reason the overload light comes on, a loud tone is emitted, and I lose all power to my computer and monitor. Perhaps there is a defect in the circuitboard on all these models?

I have this same problem. It woke me up in the middle of the night last night with the constant beep. I had to unplug it and hold down the button on the front. The switch in the back was not tripped either. The only power it was drawing was from a laptop with the power off and an lcd monitor (also off). I thought it was a fluke. I plugged it back in this morning and it seemed to be going just fine with the laptop and monitor on. I had additionally plugged in a lamp as well. All of these ran just fine all day until this evening when I moved the UPS to another outlet and started setting up my computers. With nothing plugged in except one monitor, the battery started screaming in my ear. I have now unplugged it as well as pushed a series of buttons to stop the every 30 second screams. Now I have found my way to here, searching for answers...
Any advice?

Joel,
If the unit was purchased within last three years, I recommend you to call in the APC Customer Care Center to troubleshoot this issue. The Customer Care Center Technical Support Engineer will replace the UPS in case if the unit is defective.

If the Overload LED is on with just an LCD attached, clearly it's not an overload condition. This would point towards a sensor fault with the UPS. Just curious, but why choose a Back-UPS product which isn't designed (with respect to output power on battery) to support Servers?

Cooling Fan DIED then UPS' overheat and goes in OVERLOAD and screech like an idiot....
replaced with a better fan, UPS is now working. Been engineer for the last 20++ years, APC is using cheap quality parts these days. Better fan would have cost a few pennies more. Have been using APC since the '80s. Getting dissapointed now.

This is now becoming an issue for me as well. Loud constant tone with red overload light on independent of equipment attached (currently just a wireless router / dsl modem). I'm pretty sure my APC is out of warranty (bought it late december 2006).

An update someone might find useful, since my fan is not labelled 24v like it appears some others are.
I have 2 APC BX900Rs (Back-UPS XS 900), one which failed souding the same solid tone and one with a fan that makes loud screeching sounds. I was very irritated to find that this failure mode is not documented anywhere, and APC simply recommends replacing the entire UPS when it occurs. I pulled apart and disassembled the UPS (the trick is popping off the front panel to get to the three screws under the front panel) and the fan in my BX900R is 40x40x10 but only 12v according to the label.
The fan says: Young Lin DFC401012H, 12v. The spec sheet for the fan says it is 12V, has an input current of 0.09A, and runs on 1.1W of power at 6000 rpm, approx 7 CFM and 26dB-A.
I will be replacing it with a similar 40mm fan that runs slightly slower according to it's spec sheet, but it should push enough air since I run the UPS in a home office environment that usually doesn't get very hot. The stock fan specs a minimum of 5.44CFM so the 6CFM fan I bought should work fine.
I also bought a new battery for the UPS with the screeching fan, since its battery was so dead that the UPS wouldn't even power on to do a self-test. The battery from the UPS with the steady tone might still be good but I can't really test it until the replacement fans arrive. A store in town sells the generic 12v SLA batteries used in the UPS for about $48 per pair, much better than the $95 (shipped) APC charges. The APC batteries aren't anything special, since they just slap APC stickers on generic batteries anyhow (I pulled a sticker off to get the specs off of the battery). My batteries are branded "vision CR1270", 12v 7AH.
Be careful - at least one amazon.com seller is advertising "APC" branded replacement batteries for $78, which is really close to what APC charges for their batteries with the full warranty. But the amazon seller ends up shipping batteries with a sticker that says "ABC", not APC. The batteries work the same but they are not real APC batteries and therefore void any warranty and carry no APC warranty on the batteries. If you want that warranty and don't have a local shop that will warranty their batteries, then you might be better off buying the super expensive APC batteries.

Just opened my unit and did so checking. Everthing seems to be working. Charging at 26.2v. Noticed the fan was not turning and helped it get started. That seems to have done the trick. At least on my unit.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one having this problem. From the messages I have read today, this problem seems to stem from inferior design by APC. Inferior design equals inferior product. I have had my XS 900 for two years and in the last week I started getting the "Screech of Death" as well. I replaced the battery to no avail. Since I live in Canada, paying the shipping to send this unit back to APC is not feasible. Unless someone has nailed down the problem and the fix that can be down on the work bench by the end user, this XS 900 is going directly to the dump and I'm going directly to the competition.

Fortunately, it took 15 minutes to address this problem. A quick check of the net and retailers in my area revealed that I can get a comparable UPS with excellent user reviews from another manufacturer with more features, a better warranty and a better price. As well, the retailer offers an extended warranty. No more APC "Screech of Death" for me.

Stumblebee,
What kind of equipment do you have on the UPS? I must tell you after 29 years in the industry and supporting presales hardware solutions for nearly twelve years of which the past six years have been supporting APC exclusively that a competitors' unit may very well have the same or similar issues. I can assure you that inferior design/product is not an issue with APC. APC's failure rates are very low in comparison to the competition.
Sure, I may be impartial to APC but I can tell you that there are very few vendors I would recommend as comparable and competitive to APC's products. There are more APC single phase UPS' being used today then any other brand out there.
If you are using the BX900R for servers you may have an issue and if you are using it for laser printers you have a good chance to have problems as well.
The Back UPS family of products is not made for servers. These are made for desktops and home networks.
The BX900R is not even available anymore. This unit is discontinued and replaced by the BX1000G:

Good luck to you and happy holidays,
Deron Braun
I do not work for APC but support APC to resellers at a major computer ditributor.

I am sure that your personal experience with APC is the source of your loyalty. Loyalty is an admirable sentiment. For me, this is not about loyalty. This is totally about performance which is an absolute. A product either performs or it doesn't. Loyalty is no cure for poor design. A Google search of "APC false overload" shows that this has been a problem with various models of APC units for at least two years. That is more than enough time to address a design issue. UPS design is not rocket science. This is my second APC unit. My load demands outgrew my first APC. I am sure we both get the same emails and hard copy mailings regularly from APC extolling their products and support. I know what APC says goes into their products. I also know that I have a dead APC that gives the "Screech of Death" and that mine is far from the only one. My UPS will be replaced tomorrow by a unit not made by APC. APC's design problems are not my problems.
My equipment? A desktop, a router, a VOIP connector for the router, base unit for a cordless phone, and an answering machine. Total wattage < 300 watts.

This crap just happened to me too. Obviously a design problem. It appears the fan (why design with one?) stops spinning, causing a loss of cooling, and causing a false overload signal because the chip gets hot. So now my computer is without a UPS, now what? Is actually going to mea culpa, or force people to ship these back at their expense?

I just ran into this problem. Googled BX900R and found this thread.
I have 3 older 1500's and they have performed flawlessly.
The BX900R shut down 2 days ago, letting out constant beep, and "overload" was lit.
After removing, testing battery & restarting, it ran for two more days and again today crashed my pc with "Overload".
I purchased an XS 1000 today which says the load is 115w !
Came here to check warranty. Expired in July. ( jb0728006735 ) Completely annoying.
I did notice there's a noise like a poorly-preforming internal fan, and after reading this thread I think that's the problem.
Removing back plate gives no obvious next dissasembly step.
APC - I've purchased a LOT of your products and this one's definitely a quality issue!
This issue should be covered under some kind of recall and not subject to purchase-date limitations.
At the VERY LEAST, you could provide instructions on dissasembly to repair or replace cooling fan - I assume it's a standard 12v muffin fan.

Anoldman, I hate to say it but the "VERY LEAST' that APC can do is EXACTLY what you and others are getting in regards to the "Screech of Death". I stripped the batteries from my XS 900 and dumped it into the recycling bin. It was replaced with an excellent product from the competition. Problem solved.

My BX900R has failed with the same symptoms. Should I go fan hunting (I now have four good batteries (2 complete sets)) or buy a competitors unit? Mine is about 14 months old.I remain concerned that APC declares the unit "not user serviecable, we do not have any Idea how long this will increase the life of the Unit, Finally, I can't take a chance of losing Thousands of Professional Photographs. Sorry for this post I just needed to Vent, Vent, Vent...................

Just happened to me too. Second one in 18 months. This was a rebuilt that replaced the first one. Sure enough, the fan went bad and the overload went on. I got the fan going for one and a half days and no overloadproblem until the cheap fan died for good.
At least when it went today it was at the realistic time of 06:03 Monday morning instead of 01:15 Saturday morning. To top it all off, I have it in a cooled computer room that I have set at 72F and that wasn't enough to keep the board from blowing the overload alarm.
Will be contacting APC tomorrow.

Thanks goodness I found this thread! Googled BX900R and a couple of clicks led me here. I have the exact same problem with my unit. It seems this is a widespread problem leading me to believe this is the reason why this line of UPS was discontinued. I tried live chat but they are closed on Sat. I will try the support line. I have 100% belief in UPS quality as I have been an owner of a previous product that performed flawlessly. Hopefully they won't give me too much trouble on my claim.

I picked up what seemed to be a good-condition BX900 at a garage sale. Ha! Takes almost 1/2 hour before screech of death starts. Batteries seem to be OK.
I checked with Bodycount, but he's now out of fans.

I too had the failure about a month ago, got a bigger and better (in my opinion) unit from another vendor.
This would be my third crappy APC product. I think Staples sells the junk line of products, so i stopped purchasing this kind of equipment from them.
Anyhow, i took the unti apart and the fan that i guess is not working properly reads:
Y.S.TECH
DC Brushless fan
FD244010HB
DC24 0.07A
Made in China (there's a shocker)
two pin power connector, fan is held to a small heat sink with four small screws.
Not that difficult to pull the unit apart. (most painful was unsnapping the front cover off, the rest was screws)
When i decide to waste more time, i'll replace the fan and see it that helps any.
My unit has been unplugged for about 3weeks now, yanked the good batteries out at that time too. Voltage meter couldn't pick anything within the unit, it was dead.
I still wont trust it on my equipment anymore, so if anyone needs the batteries, shout out.

hi gary,
sorry that tech support told you the wrong thing. it doesn't really make sense to me either..generally if you run into battery related issues that could be caused by a faulty third party battery, then well that is what you'd be told - that we cannot support a third party battery in the UPS.
i wasnt able to find your case either to research who told you this. if you'd like me to try to look into it further for you, let me know.

Count me in as another victim of APC cheap-ass component selection. Yep, I too replaced the batteries to no avail.
I registered just NEVER AGAIN APC. Tripp-lite here it come.

I am so glad I am not the only one. Add me to the list also. I don't recall when I purchased this failed unit, but I just pulled the battery cover in the inspection papers are in there with a date from Feb 2008, so I assume it is out of warranty, but may not have been when it failed a good while ago.
I originally purchased this unit to protect a Buffalo Terastation for testing before I put it into service since the drives being used had about 2 years on them already. Other than the TeraStation, I also had my Motorola Surfboard cable modem and my WiFi Router plugged into the XS900. Right before finishing 6 months of testing the RAID it degraded then report a drive bad, then another, then another, the TeraStation went bad, this was in the late May early June 2009 timeframe, I still have the 2000+ emails the TeraStation sent me before I canned it. Since that time only the Cable Modem and Router have been on the XS900, on draws 0.3 amps at 110 and the other 0.8 at 110, my math says that is roughly 120 watts, or not enough to even lightly toast bread. I don't recall when the XS900 failed. I think it was well over 18 months ago, I noted the problem, could not reset, wanted to surf so I moved the two low power consumption devices to the surge protected only ports and have since had a $180 surge protector.
I did not think it was the Fan, since that is the only noise I could hear inside the device and it seems to be moving a little bit of air??? Lately it has started to make a little more noise. Since I am certified and work as an IT surgeon, I am sure I can service the non user servicable parts, I guess I will find a fan for this one and see if it still works, the battery must have no charge since the unit has been plugged in but not online for nearly 2 years now. Since I will be spending for a replacement UPS I will not for XS900 battery if one is needed that's for certain. Too bad such a stupid bean counter mistake has lost a customer following. I will not be recommending the 1500's and 5000's like I used to.
BTW ... I was looking at the BestBuy site and noticed they have replacement batteries for the APC devices, some pictured with an ABC name on them.
2nd Edit: Found the ADDA fan by the part # AD0424HB-G70 on eBay for $2 cheaper than Jameco and with free shipping. I really just did not want to create an account at Jameco for a $12 order, I may or may not ever have to use them again.

Had the same problem with mine. BX900R. Solid tone after it was running for a bit. Found out the fan died. Bought some fans on ebay and replaced it. Now it's working perfectly.
I have 9 spare fans if you need one. Replacing it is easy. Took me 15 minutes with some soldering. PM me if you need a fan and your warranty isn't valid anymore.

I just had the same problem, unfortunately the warranty of the UPS expired a couple of month ago (what a surprise...), so when I called in needless to say that the APC CSR was utterly useless, did not even propose a part number or part details, what a lousy service.
Thankfully there are people here that searched for a replacement and provide that valuable information, I know for sure that next time I look for an UPS, APC's reputation won't be a factor, and I'll make sure everyone I know in IT is aware of this story.

I too just ran into the same problem tonight with the 'overload' light and complete shut off. I've noticed the fan making some weird noise for the last couple days and I guess it just had enough this evening. I wouldn't put all the blame on APC for this, maybe the supplier had a bad batch of fans? I'm not sure if mine is still under warranty or not but I just ordered a $10 ball bearing fan off the net and am going to fix it myself. The whole shipping this back is a waste of my time over something that will take 10 minutes to fix. The fan and heat sensor could be bypassed too and the thing would probably run fine but I just assume put it back how it should be. One problem from a 2-3 year UPS that runs 24/7 corrected by a simple fan replacement and some of you people sound like it's given you nothing but trouble. Judging by the illiteracy in some of these posts I'd hope all of you people claiming to be in the "IT Industry" have some education before trying to work on any of this equipment.

All I can say is that the numbers speak for themselves.
We have many different APC UPS models, with a total number of units around 35.
We purchased 7 of these BX900R units in April of 2007.
Since 2007 the only units to experience problems, other than batteries, have been these units.
Unit JB0645036888 Failed on 7/22/09 - Flashing overload and constant alarm tone - RMA on 7/24/09
Unit JB0701002971 Failed on 7/21/09 - Flashing overload and constant alarm tone - RMA on 7/24/09
Unit JB0701002704 Failed on 7/23/09 - Flashing overload and constant alarm tone - RMA on 7/24/09
Unit JB0645036889 Failed on 8/12/09 - Flashing overload and constant alarm tone - RMA on 8/19/09
Unit JB0701002962 Failed on 4/23/10 - Flashing overload and constant alarm tone - RMA on 4/23/10 Note : this is the end of warranty period.
Unit JB0652009721 Failed on 1/3/11 - Flashing overload and constant alarm tone -
There is no question in my mind that there is either a design flaw with the unit itself, or a flaw with one of the components used in manufacture.

I've got two with the same symptoms. APC is replacing 1 under warranty, I'm out by a few months on the other one. While we're thankful that it's being replaced, APC is sending another BX900R, which is less than thrilling. I'm a bit more concerned that, when I pressed the CSR for details on the nature of the failure, in order to try and get the other unit repaired, that we were instead pointed to the "trade-up" program.
We've got about 18 other systems that are fine (none are BX900R's) - these two were used for remote offices and were stored after the projects ended. From what I've read online, this seems like a widespread problem. If we don't get an honest answer to the nature of the failure from APC, we're going to replace the other units with another manufacturer as each one comes up for battery replacement. We'll also begin recommending to our corporate clients that they go Emerson/Liebert rather than APC.

In response to the concerns posted on this thread in the past few weeks, I brought this to the attention of the people at APC responsible for this product line.
Here is what I have to share:

Well, my unit just started the dreaded scream. Removing all load, and restarting it, it screamed after a while. I noticed
that the fan is extremely noisy.
Guess I'll try the fan replacement option. I just replaced the batteries a few months ago, so I'd like to keep
the unit going if possible.
Seeing how I was once an engineer, IC designer, and mechanic, I think I can handle changing out a fan.
I once changed out the engine and transmission of a Studebaker pickup and installed a Chevy engine and
transmission. Can't be that hard to do a fan, don't you think?

A search on the same problem brought me to this thread. After several months of reliable service, all of a sudden, the BX900 had a constant tone and the front-panel Overload indicator was lit. The equipment attached had lost power. The rear circuit–breaker had not been tripped. Pressing the front panel switch stopped the tone but only for about 30 seconds. I unplugged everything from the back of the unit, and pressed the front panel switch, but again within 30 seconds, the tone was back with the overload indicator. With the attached equipment shut down, I figured the battery must have been having a problem. I flipped the unit over and removed the battery, and do another reset. Still the constant tone and overload indicator came back. With battery totally removed, this continued for 5 or 6 more presses of the front panel switch until it stopped completely. The internal circuitry does not get back to a quiescent state for a few moments. I could hear a small fan running inside the unit. The unit was moderately hot but I cannot tell what temperature it should be operating at. The room it was in is air-conditioned and cool.
I measured the battery, which was 12.5 V. I did not test with a load on the battery.
With the unit still plugged into the wall, the unit was now quite. After several days of no reoccurrence while being plugged into the wall outlet, I reconnected the battery but did not plug anything into the back of the unit. Within a few minutes, the unit started the tone and overload light again. Therefore, even though the battery measures correct voltage, it does trigger the overload condition. The internal electronics are either having problems or the battery is having problems, which neither is acceptable as this unit is not very old (less than a year).
After completely removing the battery a second time, the unit stopped with the constant tone and overload indicator a second time, at least for about 15 minutes. Then it started again even though the battery had been totally removed 18 minutes earlier. The top of the unit seems to be too hot from what I would consider a sensible operating temperature. From my experience as an electronics engineer, this would point to the circuitry in the main box having a problem of overheating possibly, triggered by the slightest load (such as when the battery was re-attached or when it simply triggered on its own without the battery). Since I am not the only one experiencing this same problem this makes me wonder if this unit has a design flaw. What is APC offering as a solution?

"+Therefore, even though the battery measures correct voltage, it does trigger the overload condition. The internal electronics are either having problems or the battery is having problems, which neither is acceptable as this unit is not very old (less than a year).+"
This is actually not the issue. Some good tests were done but the overload signal is not connected to the state of the battery in any way. The overload alarm/signal is triggered by a sensor on the UPS logic board detecting that the load attached to the UPS is pulling too much power, i.e. more than the rated UPS capacity. As Kevin stated this could be a sensor, or "logic" issue.

I do agree it is not the battery as while I was editing the previous post, it started again without the battery being in it for the last 18 minutes. I also think that my assessment of the constant tone starting again within 30 seconds is excessive. It is starting the tone again after pressing the front panel but by the wall clock, it happens about 5 seconds later, same as it always has. Now it is constantly tripping every 5 seconds; I have no choice but to unplug it from the wall.

I would consider calling the primary APC Tech. Support line (1-800-800-4272) to check if the UPS is in warranty and speak to one of our Call Center representatives about the possibility of an RMA. Alternatively you may want to consider a trade-UPS to one of our server/network grade Smart-UPS units if you are indeed using this with a "server" and not a home computer.

This unit was not used with a server (as the initial person that posted in this thread was apparently using). This was used with a home computer. I posted in this thread because my unit had the same problem. I was hoping the initial poster would test his unit without the battery as I did to see if he gets the same reaction. Since his post was several months ago, I am guessing that he has arrived at a solution and no longer is concerned about this issue.
The computer this unit was connected to is an eMachines XP OS unit, minimal drain. I returned home to find the computer down, and the UPS with the overload. Plugged into another supply, the PC would not boot but would try to start. A restore to the last working point would not complete (hung). This was in Safe Mode. Finally, it will not even boot into Safe Mode (completely dead). I was not aware of any thunderstorms while I was gone but we had some a couple days before. I wondered if this unit had been hit by a surge that added to its demise and somehow contributed to the demise of the PC. Since there was another post with the same situation, I wondered if the design of the UPS itself is to blame. The support people should be able to take a look at it and see if either is the case.

Hi Vernon,
May I know the exact model and serial number of the unit?If you get the same error from the unit. You may call our technical support hotline, 800-800-4272 press 2 for BackUPS department. A rep should be able to assist you. They may either request you to troubleshoot the unit over the phone and give you replacement BackUPS, if needed.
