Today my fan for my Back-UPS XS 1500 LCD came on. I did not even know it had a fan. Why does the fan come on? Is my APC about to blow up? Lol. I turned it off and unplugged it from the wall and the fan is still running.

The fan in my XS 1500 started running occasionally a week or two ago. The unit finally shut itself down last weekend, presumably because it was (or thought it was) overheating. The batteries are very old. Could dead batteries cause this or might it be a problem in the circuitry?

Hi dreadd, the fan for these units can come on for a number a reasons. The most common one are if the ups reaches a certain internal temp of is the ups is boosting or trimming the incoming voltage. Either way it should be too much of a concern unless you hear the fan making any kind of odd noises (which could indicate an issue with the fan itself). Hope this helps.
